DLR, Mako, & Fields – ‘Old Soul/Bridge The Gap’

Mako’s Utopia Music follows up on Fields’ solo single ‘On Your Own/Colours’ with a killer cut from DLR, Mako, and Fields, set to drop May 5th.  The trio put their heads together for the A-side, ‘Old Soul’, and put forth a warm and emotive roller that will hit the nostalgia button on drum and bass listeners, old and new.  The perfect balance between soul and step.  DLR takes the reins on his first solo piece for Utopia and turns the B-side into a bellowing crusade of DLR’s signature energy; masterful and meticulous bass programming, dystopian atmospheres, and nothing but the crispiest of drum work.  Don’t sleep on this one! Unfortunately I can’t find any clips to show you guys BUT, take my word when I say it’s monstrous.  As soon as previews surface, I’ll update the post.

Ez everyone.  After a hefty hiatus, Syte has resurfaced his Open Earz imprint with one of the underground’s most talented rising figures, Promise One.  Marking Nick’s third release since his 2011 debut, there is a distinct evolution apparent throughout his sound design – a sense of cohesiveness and clarity that signals the dawn of strong legacy.  The triple track release puts forth two to physical and three to digital, pleasing both sides of the dichotomous format landscape.  Joining forces with Mancunian vocalist, Sparkz, a member of the Voodoo Black trio who can also be spotted running the mic for The Mouse Outfit, ‘See We Roll’ is a dancefloor gem with its vacillating bass variations and entangled percussion being attentively navigated with cunning dialect.  The flip comes with an entirely different flavor as Promise One shares the buttons with Geode, who has been redefining boundaries of his own under the roof of his collective effort imprint, Chord Marauders.  ‘Chroma’ taps into a more soulful and melodic archive with pitched down vocal cuts and synthetic key progressions complemented with shuffling hat rides and lush, spacious pads that give the mix an enduring warmth.  The digital exclusive, ‘Ghost Note’, comes strong with a dreadnaught dissonance vibe.  Phase-drenched synths syncopate across the soundfield with panning and delay as their main mechanisms of movement.  The anomalous atmospheres and guttural sub-pressure compliment the cyborg apocalypse quite nicely, might I add.

Moonshine Recordings – ‘Steppin’ Forward’ LP [VA]

As the Moonshine back catalog continues to grow in both size and undeniable quality, the imprint has launched one of the finest campaigns to date with the ‘Steppin’ Forward’ VA LP.  The anticipation of this release has been surging through the underground community, listeners and bloggers alike.  Having been fortunate enough to receive an early copy, I don’t think there has been a day in the past three weeks that I haven’t played at least half of the album.  During my long commutes home from university, sitting in the standard Los Angeles traffic, this album has played an integral role in me not wanting to roundhouse-kick nearly everybody on the highway while simultaneously throwing hand grenades during my acrobatics.  For that, I thank Moonshine and every artist featured deeply.  ‘Steppin’ Forward’ brings a plethora of new – to Moonshine – talent (Compa, OSC, Numa Crew, Adam Prescott, and Dubsworth, among others)  under the label’s umbrella, which is likely an indication of what us listeners can expect to see in the coming year as far as releases.  I’ve mentioned a couple of my favorite tracks below, but make sure you bag this LP, whether you’re a vinyl or digital head, because each track is top-shelf business.

My absolute favorite off this release is Numa Crew’s ‘Knowledge’.  The swinging halfstep percussion provides perfect avenue for the syncopated collection of delayed vocals and horns to drift in and out of the mix.  The LFO pressure on the sub is immense and injects a lasting amount of energy into the listener with its single bar presence.  Compa’s ‘One Lion’ is another one of my favorites.  It’s spacious aesthetic and rolling bongo hits invoke a seamless listening experience, while the vocal processing adds an element of introspect that always gets my mind moving in the right direction.  The last I’ll mention is Hatti Vatti ft. Cian Finn – ‘Education’.  This one will prove to be a prolific anthem simply due to the profound message of Cian Finn’s vocals.  Everybody, including myself, would be wise to remember these words when in times of defeat or struggle.

Atish – ‘Electronic Groove’ March 2014

Atish Mehta, a man who has been a favorite performer of mine for the last couple of years – basically, since the first time I heard him mix!, has been selected for the March Electronic Groove podcast and responded with a seamless journey through melodic progression.  One of the (seemingly) few DJ’s to maintain success without putting out releases, his sets are always PACKED with energy – in terms of both music and stage presence – and perfectly suited for the vibe of his given crowd.  I would go as far as saying that it’s impossible to have anything but fun when watching him spin.  His smile grabs you and his blends move you.  Listen below for yourself!  And, if you’re lucky enough to be hitting Miami for WMC, I would do anything in your power to catch one of his sets (dates in Soundcloud description)!
