LAS & Mikael – ‘LAS & Mikael’ EP [Innamind Recordings]

Las & Mikael IMRV009

Ez everyone.

The signing of this release has been doing jumping-jacks through the underground for the past couple of months (maybe only a month, I have no concept of time anymore).  After each of the tunes were first aired with Mikael’s TRUSIK feature a couple of months back, there has been an uproar of anticipation among deep-paletted listeners across the globe.  This statement is bolstered by the marking of Innamind’s first 12″ 180 gram plate, and the pre-orders on Innamind’s Surus store selling out twice already.  Granted, there was a very limited number placed for pre-order, but still, that says a lot about the release!  While I’ve been following LAS for some years now (2010 I believe is the first I heard from him w/Desto on Black Box), Mikael I had never heard of prior to TRUSIK featuring him.  I’m not sure how the two crossed paths, but if I believed in any nonsensical ideas of “fate” I would say these two were meant to make music together.  Their styles on an independent basis are strikingly impressive, but more notable is the seamlessness in which their sounds compliment each other, culminating as one of the most refreshing output’s I can recall since the over-saturation of dungeon plagued dubstep. Quick note: I say “plagued” not because I am displeased with the cavernous and dark aesthetic of that particular offshoot, but because lets face it, there were way too many songs coming out sounding formulaic and there was lull in innovation.  Obviously these thoughts can’t be blanketed for the scene in its entirety because there were always innovators, but as a general whole that is how I feel/saw things.  Now, back to LAS & Mikael.  The warmth in their productions is what immediately hooked me.  Their production resonates on more of a human level with me than much of the electronic music coming out of recent.  While modern engineering has paved avenue for the biggest, deepest, crispiest, and flawless sounds to date, it at times has neglected the feeling of slight imperfections and nuances often only experienced as a result of the human touch/experience.  The nostalgia when listening to music that evokes these associations is something I cherish nowadays so I find solace in the music of those who are able to replicate it.

Have a listen below to the previews and make sure to be quick on Monday if you want to purchase this 12″ – I suspect it will fly off the shelves very quickly.

Gantz – ‘Stayer/Lyrical Trick’ [IMRV005]

IMRV005 ART

Gantz returns to the Innamind imprint with two rhythmically syncopated beats that showcase the young Turk’s uncanny ability to program drum patterns in a  concise, and intentional manner.  His distant proximity to the UK scene seems to aid in establishing the ‘Gantz’ sound, as his track formulas are generally unique and provide a complex landscape of percussive arrangement not seen in most dubstep.

Emir also just released his track ‘U Won’t Mind’ b/w Thelem’s remix via Black Box records not far back, so make sure the check that one out ———->  HERE.  The remainder of 2013 is going to be exciting as he just recently announced the signing of another 12” that will be out in the near future.  Be sure to follow his page (below) to get further updates on the label and tracks that will be releasing!

Gantz – ‘Enso/Siyam’ [IMRV003]

Innamind_Gantz_EP_pack

Innamind Recordings has been one of the recently founded (2011) imprints that has taken the underground dance scene by storm, specifically with regards to dubstep.  With a discography showcasing artists like Perverse, Catacombs & Knowledge, and Nanobyte, the third installment of their vinyl had a mighty reputation to uphold.  Label-boss Jeremy Pattison drew for just the right weapon with his signing of Gantz.  Quickly taken under by Thinking for the Box Clever imprint last year, Gantz should be no stranger to any of your ears.  Both of his tracks ‘Catalyst’ and ‘No Faith’ were, and still are highly regarded by heads throughout.

For his sophomore physical release, Gantz again shows his knack for blisteringly concise percussive abilities alongside obscurity and eeriness within his atmospheres.

‘Enso’ ||

This beat unfolds in a proper shuddersome fashion, with dissonant pads that set the stage for an abrupt attack of drum grooves and sub-bass swing.  The careful placement of his bongos compliment the overall aesthetic of this beat quite nicely.

.

‘Siyam’ ||

No question this is my favorite track off the release.  As the intro provides a seemingly junglist vibe with diamondback-esqu (the snake) rattles and slowly-decaying synths I couldn’t help being reminiscent of the old-school raves I used to attend.  The scattered stuttering of his kick drums, beautifully chopped vocal processing, and flawless placement of his tribal percussion creates an extremely smooth listening experience that can tear up just about any venue, be it a dark warehouse, sandy beach, or bedroom skank session.

Occult – Tron (FREE DOWNLOAD)

Big up fam’

Hope all is well! 🙂  Got another free tune for you today..

This one’s from the man like Occult, who has been tearing up bass-bins in this latter part of 2012.  With his ‘Cauldron’ EP just dropping last week (buy link HERE), October 15th, and already topping the charts, Occult has decided to give away one of his most sought after dubs – ‘Tron’.  This beat is an absolute anthem to the dread marchers.  Druid-esque horns immediately hook you in as the half-step madness begins an onslaught of head-nod grooves.  This is a tune that will no doubt set the dance off, and possibly murder the dance, quite literally, as the pressure of this beat weakens the clubs foundation.

Give Occult a massive shout for this one fam’!

Fresh Bits From Nanobyte, Dismantle, Indigo, and Core

Bless, familia!  We’re back with a handful of absolutely FIRE tunes for your ears today/tonight.  A little something for everybody’s palette.  Going to start things off nice and soulful and send you off with immense amounts of energy 🙂

First track that caught my eye today is one that is forthcoming on Innamind Recordings as part of the Nanobyte EP, due out this Friday, June 15th.  This bit, titled ‘Lost Time’, embraces a body-warming vocal sample that sets the stage perfectly for this ambient piece of art.  Beautifully placed high-hats groove into a kick that makes you think you’re heart is jumping out of your chest like you’ve just fallen madly in love.  Truly an amazing piece of music right here.  Have a listen.

Nanobyte – Lost Time (Forthcoming Innamind Recordings)

.

Picking up the energy with next one!  Dismantle on the buttons with one of the sickest tunes I’ve heard this year.  Just screams get the f*ck up and dance!  Only have a clip, but I’m sure the tune progresses nicely throughout.  The snare on this tune along with the This one is forthcoming on Digital Soundboy alongside the rest of his EP, sometime in July.  I hope you’re ready to be filled with some of the most feel-good vibes circulating the airwaves!

Dismantle – Dots (Forthcoming Digital Soundboy)

.

This next bit is one that’s forthcoming on Exit Records (EXIT042) from Indigo.  Some groove-ridden madness, the both of these tunes.  The A side, ‘Ayahuasca’, gets straight to the point with its intricate atmospherics and swinging basslines cutting out occasionally for the apocalyptic sounding vocals.  ‘The Root’ on the AA again displays masterful atmospheric placement but is a bit more on the tribal side, as far as percussion.  Indigo is definitely one to keep your eye!

Indigo – Ayahuasca / The Root

.

To wrap things up for today I have a tune that somehow slipped under my radar late last month.  This one is from Core and titled ‘Vital Nerve’.  Core is definitely a man responsible for some of the heaviest and most powerful sounds I’ve heard.  The snare on this tune top-notch, the growling bass brings monsters out the closet, and the tunes overall dynamic is phenomenal.  Large respect out to Core for this one!

That’s what we got for your ears today fam, hope you’re feeling the vibes.  We got a big weekend ahead of us and hope all ya’ll will get amongst as well.  If you’re near Santa Barbara be sure to stop by Statemynt as Bassweight Society teams up with Santa Babylon to host Distal on Friday the 15th (event page here).  All the LA crew be sure to roll through Smog Sunday’s as the one and only Goth-Trad will be throwing down a set that I’m sure will be remembered for a long time to come (event page here.).  Smog is really on a role with the quality bassweight artists they are bringing through on the late.  Mad respect out to Drew, Kelly Dean, Emu, and the rest of the Smog family.  Until next time…

To the gods.
