Mix Mondays: Weight For The Week

What’s going down people.  Well, we’re back for another installment of Mix Mondays.  This week we have some amazing mixes that should keep your holiday spirit on a roll this week.  This weeks features are quite eclectic, as far as styles, and encompass a great part of the Bass music scene as it is today.  So, without further ado, let’s get this week started!

The first mix that we have for ya’ll today is one from two absolutely amazing artists hailing from the UK, Silkie & Swindle.  Silkie is a man who needs no introduction as he has been releasing some of the funkiest, purpliest, and jazziest Dubstep tunes that have been released.  Swindle is a man who has been releasing some really amazing tunes on Butterz Records.  He has a very unique style of productions, also on the Jazz/Soul side of things.  Put these two beasts together and you have yourself a straight-up banger of a mix.  The mix, done for Mixmag late last week, displays on-par mixing skills and an arsenal of purple sounds that would make the most Catholic of school girls skank out like a badman.  Take a listen and, if you haven’t already, visit the artist pages and show some support for these two.

The next mix that we have for you dirtbags is one from California local, Dubstep don, the almighty DJG.  This unbelievably talented man has received a lot of support and hype from BWS simply because he is one the best producers/DJ’s out there.  His complex interpretations of rave music are hard not to like.  His deep vibe productions and his hyped up mixing styles are truly unique and admirable.  One of the few US producers to gain acclaim worldwide, DJG sets an example for any up-and-coming artist.  This mix that he posted up late last night is a brilliant display of track selection, mixing techniques, and deep sounds.  Enjoy!

This third mix comes from the dungeons of Killawatt.  One of the heaviest producers of 2011, this man displays some of the deepest, darkest, and weighted sounds being released.  The mix, released to celebrate his addition to Archetype artists, starts off with an absolute BANG!, and continues to roll with some of the finest display of percussion that we’ve heard.  Killawatt is definitely somebody that you need to keep your eyes.  Each successive production of his is better than the last and he quite possibly could be one of the top producers of 2012.  Sit back and make sure your subs are turned up as you get rinsed out by Killawatt and his huge amount of unreleased dubs.

We have one last mix for you folks today.  Here at BWS we are all about promoting the local talents of our area, Southern California.  So today, we have a mix from a friend that we linked with on the GetDarker chat room sometime earlier this year.  This deep mix takes you on a meditative journey through sub-frequencies.  Some really good old and new tunes in this mix so take a listen and show some support to the man called Fifty Cal.

Rewind Wednesday: Where The Weight Comes From.

What’s up everybody.  Today we are going to take a little journey back in time.  First we are going to go back to a time when Dubstep was just starting to gain the title ‘Dubstep’, as it began to branch off the Dark Garage that was being made in the late 1990’s – early 2000’s.  From there we will slowly ascend into the later years of the 21st century highlighting tunes that really began to cement Dubstep’s foundation as a musical genre and, most importantly, as a culture.  For some of you this might be preexisting knowledge, and if that’s the case there is nothing wrong with hearing classics one more time, but for some of you this could very well serve as a great history lesson of the music you love.  We believe that regardless of what particular style of Dubstep you fancy, be it the aggressive ear-piercing saw waves, or be it the deeper, spacious, and more meditative sounds, it is important to understand the roots of where it all came from.  So here we go.  Today we have 6 songs for everybody that, in a very incomplete manner, show the evolution of Dubstep.

This first tune is one produced by, arguably, the most influential person in the early formation of Dubstep music.  Lewis Beadle, aka El-b, is a man who has been innovating sounds since the days when we were just elementary youth’s.  Owner of Ghost Recordings and all-around badman, he has been keeping sounds fresh and forward-thinking.  The tune that we have for you today is one from late 2002, titled ‘Buck & Bury’, still has many elements of garage but also shows the emphasis on low-end bass-lines that had began to show in the music.  Just a heads up, the HIGHLY anticipated album, ‘Ghost Chaser’, from Ghost Recordings is due out soon.  This is something you should definitely keep your eyes open for as it will surely be a milestone release for bass music.

El-b ft. Juiceman – Buck & Bury

The second tune is from another frontman of Dubstep.  Running the FWD> nights and spreading music through hand-to-hand exchanges of CD’s, Hatcha was a busy man, as he still is today!  Catch Hatcha alongside Crazy D every Tuesday on Kiss FM 12-1 am.  The tune we have for you from the badman Hatcha is titled ‘Dub Express’ and was released on Tempa back in 2003.  Again, we see that Garage break-style drum sequence, but the bass-line has much more presence.  Lend your ears.

The next track hails from the productions of Digital Mystikz.  Composed of two unrivaled producers, Mala and Coki, this production group has released some of the most prolific tunes in the history of Dubstep.  But these guys are more than just a musical icon.  Their philosophies on life, love, and the spirituality of human being’s is of utmost admiration.  These philosophies show through their music as they incite an immense amount of emotion with each tune.  The one we have for you today is a release from 2004 called ‘Pathways’, released on Big Apple Records.

The next track is one that EVERY SINGLE person who calls themselves a “Dubstep head” should know.  If you don’t know this track just pretend that you do, because not knowing is just embarassing.  The production, titled ‘Midnight Request Line’, is by far one of the largest tunes that was, and still is, ever released.  Coming from the world-acclaimed production of Oliver Jones, aka Skream, this tune perpetually flooded the airways of every radio station exhibiting Dubstep music.  Nuff’ said about this one, just turn the sub up and skank out.  Released 2005.

This next one is from the likes of Walsh and Kromestar and is a melodic roller with vibes similar to the Dub music made in the late 1980’s from influences such a King Tubby and Scratch Perry.  This one, released in 2006, is truly a spliff riddim’, despite its title of  ‘Panik Room’.

The final tune that we have for everybody today hails from the deepest dungeons of Dubstep music, the archives of Distance.  This tune, ‘Radical’, gave way to many of the purely evil sounds that have been adopted by so many producers today.  Owner of Chestplate Records and some of the heaviest tunes to reach peoples ears, Distance is one our favorite producers to ever grace this earth.  This one was released in 2007 and is an absolute necessity to any heads’ collection.  Be afraid.

Mix Mondays: Weight For The Week

What’s going on everybody. This week for mix monday we’re going to keep it short and sweet. These mixes speak for themselves. Our first mix that we have to feature comes from a man who really needs no introduction, Hatcha. This man is, without argument, one of the most influential pioneers of Dubstep music. He has seen Dubstep music evolve from the dark garage of the late 90’s and early 00’s into the omni-faceted culture that it has become today. All while firmly maintaining his signature style and underground acclaim. To those of you local readers, you better not miss out on seeing Hatcha, N-Type, and Crazy-D at the Hollywood House of Blues on December 17th. That’s right, these ultra-badmen are stopping off in LA on their Sin City Tour, and you would literally be a pair of clown shoes if you did not catch this one. So here you go, take a listen to this proper mix with Hatcha b2b Lost.

Hatcha & Lost – Mixmag November Set

The second mix for today is a little different than the typical material we feature here on BWS, but nonetheless is still an amazing showcase of another one of Dubsteps’ Dons, Skream. This man is one of the, if not THE, biggest names in the world of bass music. From his deep rooted involvement in the early years of Dubstep at Big Apple Records to his worldwide mega-tours, Oliver Jones has done and seen it all. This mix that we have from him was taken from his live set at The Warehouse Project. It is a 130bpm set that is an absolute dancefloor smasher. It is also available as a free download, so capitalize on that!

The final mix that we have for you guys is one from the mighty Subscape. This mix was featured on the latest KMag podcast back in October of this year. This mix is an absolute ravers soundtrack, a vibe roller-coaster, and just purely business. He starts the mix out with none other than Cali-native Matty G, and from there on out drops a very vibrant selection of tunes. Subscape doesn’t start mixing until 24:00 into the podcast, so if you don’t want to hear the host talking about the new tunes he’s featuring just go on ahead and skip right on through!

F*CK Yeah Friday

Big up to all the heads!  Yes, it’s Friday and boy do we have a HUGE lineup of tracks for you today.  We are truly fascinated at how many top-notch releases are making it out at the end of 2011 and early 2012.  With all that has happened this year, 2012 will surely play out to be one of the most interesting years for bass music, for any and all genres.

The first track that we have for you today is a collaboration between Biome and an artist previously featured on Bassweight Society, Thelem.  The track is titled ‘Jugana’, and pushes out some heart stopping low-frequencies.  The bouncy drum sequence keeps your legs on the move while your mind is on a journey through deep space, possibly to Kepler-22b.  Hopefully this track will see a release in the near future but for now enjoy this Soundcloud clip!

The next tune that we have is one from the EXTREMELY talented New Zealand duo, TRUTH, aka “the sonic architects of songs.”  We had the pleasure of hosting these guys at one of our shows up here in Santa Barbara and they absolutely smashed the town into pieces.  People had no idea what they were in for and when they got it, they couldn’t get enough!  This track, titled ‘Last Time’, is one engineered in the finest of manners.  The vibe that this track gives out is honestly still a mystery to us but, YOU WANT THIS FEELING.  Take a listen.

The next pair of tracks that we have for you are an absolutely mandatory component of everybody’s music library(once they are released).  We speak of the men known as Killa & Instinct.  The Bristol based production team has been on top their game and is now looking forward to releases on Orientis Recordings and BOKA Records in early 2012.  The first track deserving of attention is one titled ‘Elements’ and is due out on a special three-part release series from Boka early next year.  A little on the chilled side of things this track is very beneficial to any thought-requiring task, as it’s percussion filled sound spectrum rolls through your body with meditative vibes.  The next one that we have is a remix of Thelem’s tune titled ‘Drone’ that was released in October of this year.  Again, this track is filled with immense percussion and bangs out some ridiculously deep and dark vibes.  Take a listen to both below!

We have one final track for you today and it’s one from the man like Ipman.  We just recently featured the remix he had done of Killawatt’s ‘Sidewinder’, and he’s back on our radar with this unreal original production, titled ‘Mirage’.  This tune is an epic buildup into one of the funkiest and most bass-heavy tunes that we’ve heard on the late!  There is no room for denial that this tune is of absolute quality!  Take a listen and try not to dance, guaranteed it won’t happen :).

Weight Watch Wednesday

Easy everybody.  It’s already halfway through the week!  Time to celebrate hump day with some proper sounding bassweight.  Today, as always, we are featuring some absolutely amazing tunes that we are sure you will enjoy.  There are so many unreal tracks being released right now that it would be impossible to highlight them all so we are just going to bring forth a few that stand out the most to us.

The first track is due out for release on December 19, available through Surus first.  This tune is an absolute BADMAN riddim’!  Personally we have never heard anything from either of these two producers, call us lame, but we can guarantee that we will definitely be on top of their releases from here on out.  Dub Phizix and Skeptical absolutely smashed the production on this one.  To top off, the badass MC, Skeptical, spits some venomous bars to add some real vibes.  Getting a release on Exit Records, which is a label run by D-Bridge, this tune has been getting relentless amounts of hype on the web, and rightfully so!  Don’t forget the day that this track comes out!!!  Test press’ went on sale early yesterday and were instantly sold out, we imagine the same story will follow for the official release.  Massive out to the boys that made this tune, it’s straight up business.

The next release that we have for you was a recent release on Black Box’s ‘XXX’ special edition series.  The original track is one done by Killawatt and is titled ‘Sidewinder’.  This is yet another tune that Killawatt has produced in the finest of fashions.  This bassweight roller gets the night started off real proper by easing you into a head nodding frenzy, and subsequently throwing some mysterious vocal cuts that compliment the soundscape quite nicely.  The flip of this release is a remix that Ipman composed and is made for the dancefloor.  The jungle-vibed break pattern of the drums incite flashbacks to our days of being strict junglists.  Have a listen to both of these and don’t forget to purchase your copies either!!!

The next release that we have for everybody is one from the likes of TMSV, and just received a release on Black Box’s side label, Box Clever.  The ‘A’ side, titled ‘Myth’, emits a truly tribal vibe while sending the listener through different low-end paths of thought.  The bongos on this track keep the shuffle alive while keeping it nice and slow.  The flip of this release, ‘Flow’, is another gem that TMSV can throw under the belt.  This track starts off with vibes as the dark and ominous vocal sample immediately hooks you in.  From there this track really takes form and offers a perfect balance of frequencies.
