Southbound Hangers ft. Scratchmaster Techno – Look Better / Marchmellow Remix [LUVSIC003]

The third installment of the Love Sick Records catalog dropped today, featuring Southbound Hangers ft. Scratchmaster Techno and a remix from Marchmellow.  The original is the real gem off this release – it’s an absolute dance-smasher!  No surprise to me that it has received widespread support in the DJ sets of Skream & Benga, Dismantle, and even Funtcase and Walsh.

The notorious vocals of Scratchmaster Techno on ‘Look Better’ flow flawlessly over the bouncing beat structure as it flaunts influence from the early 90’s era of house music (clearly a favorite of the Love Sick crew!).  The kick drums on this beat will send anybody’s person into an unavoidable state of controlled movement, beautifully constructed and EQ’d.  There are some very subtle atmospheres that provide the beat with a quite an analog aesthetic, it’s really refreshing!

Marchmellow slows the tempo down with his take, adding a very dance-able set of chords progressing in a sea of reverb.  Again, this track takes on a heavy influence of early house music with the big room kick drums and chopped up, dubbed-out vocals.  Another refreshing track that embodies the Love Sick ethos of “music that’s at home in the club or the bedroom.”  Hold tight for the second drop!

The Audiovisual Spectrum: Earth616, Slime Recordings, & Diffrent Music

What’s good again crew!

Begrim here, finally found some time to enter another post on the ever-so-massive Bassweight Society.

In this installment, we’ll be looking at the (audio) visual spectrum of music and it’s varied facets.  If you are anything like me, you most likely have a wide range of music genres in your library that you constantly shuffle through.  Spanning from the recent to the old, electronic and non-electronic, this music accumulation stands as our personal ‘continuum’ so-to-say, a spectrum we use depending on our moods, feelings and listening needs.  Especially with the growth of electronic music, there can be a tendncy to ascribe a single, over-specific label to track style’s (post-dub-trap-deep…), much like what happens with the naming of colors (Robin’s Egg Sea Razzle).  This often leads to convoluted branding that can inadvertently cause bias in listeners and pigeonhole producers to  a specific style.  However, much like a graph of the visual spectrum, music is all connected by a single factor with varying amounts of energy, rhythms, and other ingredients combined.  With bass as the connecting factor of our “audiovisual” spectrum, we’ll be exploring three labels that all share this common center yet present their music in varying forms.  Beginning with some higher-energy “red/yellow” grime from Earth616, we’ll move into Slime Recordings’ mellower “blue/green” dubstep/garage/deep house, and end on something…Diffrnt… in the “purple/pink” wavelengths.

EARTH616

Earth616

Starting off is Earth616, a grime label run by the notable Logan Sama.  With no “official” webpage, Soundcloud, or Facebook, the mysterious monicker puts out primarily vinyl presses with a few digital releases scattered here and there.  Featuring released by grim legends such as Maniac, DJ Q, Faze, Miyake and Wiley, Earth616 brings some of the best grime instrumentals there are to offer.

Preditah – Gears of Grime 12″

Already receiving it’s own separate digital release in December, Earth616 recently distributed wax-pressings of this beaut.  Preditah abosultely kills it on this EP, showing the range of sound grime still has to offer.  Starting off with classic synth-heavy tracks ‘Circles VIP’, ‘Nosy Parker VIP’, Preditah then rolls out his take on trap, ‘Evil Twin’.  He follows with two super bass-heavy hitters, ‘Gully (instrumental)’ and ‘Rubicon’.  This cycle repeats itself with ‘Skank (Dub)’ and ‘Sword’, and Preditah finishes up with what he calls a “dark garage” track, ‘The Beat Skipped’.  Fusing classic slapping drumwork with deep, pulsating lows, Preditah expands upon the conventional grime sound and presents a multi-genre approach to a music style he knows and loves.  Definitely keep an eye out for his future releases, as well as the other artists on Earth616.

SLIME

Slime Recordings

Moving into the mid-spectrum sounds, Slime Recordings puts out a wide array of different styles of 12X-14Xbpm music. Working on getting their 56th release under their belt, Slime has featured EP’s by artists such as Submerse, Resketch, Mr Beeb, Eyelove and a forthcoming by Aleks Zen.

BSN Posse – Love History EP

After their debut on Slime Recordings, “Songs from the Sea EP”, BSN Posse recently released “Love History EP” which features their original track and six remixes.  Soothing vocals glide over melodic synths, giving this song a relaxing feel that still has driving energy. Each remix adds a new element to Love History, morphing it into a shuffling garage track, a low-end bass banger, a jumpy trap rhythm, and a classic deep house anthem. While any of these songs could be featured in their own single, Slime’s release of this EP helps illuminate the range of possibilities this one song has to offer. More importantly, it demonstrates that a “bass centered core” will hold prevalent no matter what direction a producers decides to take. Take a moment out of your day to have some Slime time.

DIFFRENT

Diffrent Music

Recognized by their pink Giraffe logo, Diffrent Music describes themselves as “focusing on pushing the whole movement of stripped back head-nodding drum tracks and big deep monstrous bass.” Label co-founders Hunchbak and Dexta stated that, We believe that there’s a lot of soul-less D&B music out there due to labels having to put out music that ‘HAS’ to sell. Ultimately we’re about making music fun, trying new things & putting out music that we truly love!” This point of view comes across clearly in their releases, which range from amazing low-roller drum & bass tracks to genre-bridging 170-ish tracks they categorize as “giraffestep”.  With productions by artists such as Fredric Robinson, Arkaik and Dan Marashall as well as future releases by Fearful, Fable & Beezy, and Shaded, Diffrent is definitely a label to keep an eye on in this coming year.

Fathom Audio – Promises/Ridges

Comprised of two DJ’s, Billion and Fybe, and two MC’s, Sense and Codebreaker, Fathom Audio’s single shows both the darker and lighter sides of Diffrent. “Promises” starts out with fluttering trebles and stripped-back percussion, but quickly adds a resonant, forceful bassline that drives the rest of this lurking track. Contrastingly, “Ridges” starts out with a pulling, ethereal synth and muffled female vocals and quickly transitions into a full-fledged inspiration, featuring melodic harp sweeps and percussion reminiscent of early Rockwell. Both songs are prime example of the possibilities that exist in the 170bpm realm and will have you moving along, whether it be nodding to the broody lows or swaying to the ethereal highs. Something Diffrent, for sure.

BONUS: Cursa & Futurist – Clart [Forthcoming]

Featured on Diffrent’s monthly Giraffecast, this upcoming release from Cursa & Futurist is absolutely mind-blowing. Deep, resounding bass kicks and eerie clicks haunt this track, giving it a driving yet freeform sound. Upon completion of the B-side, this release from Diffrent will be shaking subs around the world.

Raggs – In Your Eyes EP [ELK012]

Elk Beats is US-based imprint that operates on 100% self distribution and an intention of facilitating a platform forward-thought.  Founder of the label, Donnie ‘Esh-One’, has been a largely prolific figure in the United States underground scene, whether it’s his dedication to dubplate culture (the man has PILES of acetate!) or his ever-changing styles within the production arena.  You can always count on fresh-sounding music to be hosted by an innovator like Donnie.

The ‘In Your Eyes’ EP marks the twelfth release for Elk Beats and showcases a downtempo cosmic ethos.  Raggs is an OG dubstep figurehead who has long been part of El-B’s infamous Ghost Recordings crew as well as the Croydub event regularly held in Croydon.  One of the baddest females around.  She has done vocals for two beats that are produced by Dubface and Kinzy.  The release definitely holds the vibe of darker, more emotional 140 styles.  The title track, In Your Eyes, is produced by DubFace – who has been producing grime and dubstep for the past 8 years or so – and is my favorite beat off the release.  The swing of the drum pattern and the analog sound of the lead high synth add a perfect amount of gritty-emotion to the vocals laid down by Raggs.  The final track of the release is ‘Surrender’ produced by Kinzy.  Kinzy has long been making a good beat or two as well as hosting his radio show on Rood FM Mondays 2-4PM (GMT).  This track is next-level.  The spacey textures, colorful synth-work, and evocative processing of Raggs vocals make this tune a seriously cosmic piece of bass music.  The minimal percussion that is so intricately placed adds a perfect “cherry on top” to this whole mixdown.

Subreachers: Foundation EP (WRZ005)

EZ fam’.  I’m finally back to reality.  It was definitely quite the journey I embarked on, and I’m refreshed and ready to go for the next year.  It’s amazing what one week in Black Rock City can do for ones mind and soul.  I’m going to have a feature up soon showcasing a lot of the amazing art and experiences (via photo) that I shared with my family while at Burning Man last week.  It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and energetic cities on the earth – yet only exists for 1 week!

Anyways, for today, I have a little review on the fresh EP from Subreachers.  This 4-track (digital) / 3-Track (vinyl) release is an absolutely outstanding display of deep-rhythm versatility.  With sounds ranging from the foundation reminiscent wobbles of  ‘Developer’ to the jazz-infused ambiance of ‘Foundation’, Matthias Hoogewijs has really cemented himself as a producer that is here to stay.  The EP marks the fifth release for Warriorz Records, an imprint dedicated to the promotion of their fellow Belgian musicians.  The EP hits the shelves today so be sure to get your copy!

‘Developer’ || Vinyl, Digital

This tune, in my mind, is the ultimate homage to the original dubstep sound.  As the shutter-shaking wobble creeps its way in through the envelope, the masterfully constructed snare hit bleeds a reverb that sends the listener into an abyss of atmospheric groove.  The constant introduction of new sounds and grooves throughout the bars keeps this song eternally fresh and interesting.  Hold tight for the second.

‘Foundation’ || Vinyl, Digital

After the infamously talented duo, Author, formulated and introduced one of the most forward-thinking interpretations of the 140 arena, there have been many imitators – few of which I’ve found noteworthy.  This track is one of the few.  This laid back sunshine anthem has a feel-good vibe often foreign to the cold, dark nature of dubstep.

‘Karnaubawa’ || Vinyl, Digital

This one is so softly melodic and peaceful.  The subtle vocal processing really brings out an extra amount of vibe that “puts a cherry on top” of this production.  The rhythmic delay of the synths and the snap-hat combination really put the shuffle in your step and groove in your hips.  This beat is my persy off the release.

‘Return 2 Reality’ || Digital Only

Stuttered drum sequencing and howling basslines characterize this track.  Definitely takes you through a wormhole of audible frequencies.  This delightfully energetic half-step bit is one for those preparing for the dread march.  Hoods up, fists up, eyes down – bring on the revolution.

Mix Mondays: Weight For The Week

What’s going on everybody. This week for mix monday we’re going to keep it short and sweet. These mixes speak for themselves. Our first mix that we have to feature comes from a man who really needs no introduction, Hatcha. This man is, without argument, one of the most influential pioneers of Dubstep music. He has seen Dubstep music evolve from the dark garage of the late 90’s and early 00’s into the omni-faceted culture that it has become today. All while firmly maintaining his signature style and underground acclaim. To those of you local readers, you better not miss out on seeing Hatcha, N-Type, and Crazy-D at the Hollywood House of Blues on December 17th. That’s right, these ultra-badmen are stopping off in LA on their Sin City Tour, and you would literally be a pair of clown shoes if you did not catch this one. So here you go, take a listen to this proper mix with Hatcha b2b Lost.

Hatcha & Lost – Mixmag November Set

The second mix for today is a little different than the typical material we feature here on BWS, but nonetheless is still an amazing showcase of another one of Dubsteps’ Dons, Skream. This man is one of the, if not THE, biggest names in the world of bass music. From his deep rooted involvement in the early years of Dubstep at Big Apple Records to his worldwide mega-tours, Oliver Jones has done and seen it all. This mix that we have from him was taken from his live set at The Warehouse Project. It is a 130bpm set that is an absolute dancefloor smasher. It is also available as a free download, so capitalize on that!

The final mix that we have for you guys is one from the mighty Subscape. This mix was featured on the latest KMag podcast back in October of this year. This mix is an absolute ravers soundtrack, a vibe roller-coaster, and just purely business. He starts the mix out with none other than Cali-native Matty G, and from there on out drops a very vibrant selection of tunes. Subscape doesn’t start mixing until 24:00 into the podcast, so if you don’t want to hear the host talking about the new tunes he’s featuring just go on ahead and skip right on through!
