Southbound Hangers ft. Scratchmaster Techno – Look Better / Marchmellow Remix [LUVSIC003]

The third installment of the Love Sick Records catalog dropped today, featuring Southbound Hangers ft. Scratchmaster Techno and a remix from Marchmellow.  The original is the real gem off this release – it’s an absolute dance-smasher!  No surprise to me that it has received widespread support in the DJ sets of Skream & Benga, Dismantle, and even Funtcase and Walsh.

The notorious vocals of Scratchmaster Techno on ‘Look Better’ flow flawlessly over the bouncing beat structure as it flaunts influence from the early 90’s era of house music (clearly a favorite of the Love Sick crew!).  The kick drums on this beat will send anybody’s person into an unavoidable state of controlled movement, beautifully constructed and EQ’d.  There are some very subtle atmospheres that provide the beat with a quite an analog aesthetic, it’s really refreshing!

Marchmellow slows the tempo down with his take, adding a very dance-able set of chords progressing in a sea of reverb.  Again, this track takes on a heavy influence of early house music with the big room kick drums and chopped up, dubbed-out vocals.  Another refreshing track that embodies the Love Sick ethos of “music that’s at home in the club or the bedroom.”  Hold tight for the second drop!

[LUVSIC002] Riskotheque & Marchmellow: Truth – Don’t Explain (Remix)/1-800-LOVE

Hope all is well with ya’ bad selves. I wanted to take time out today to highlight the forthcoming release from Love Sick Recordings. These badmen were the first crew/artist to give us an interview last year after we got the site up and running so, aside from the fact that they write amazing music, they will always have a deep respect in my heart for the love they showed us back then. If you don’t know about the Love Sick then I strongly suggest that you acquaint yourself with their sound. On an individual level, Love Sick is composed of Riskotheque, Screen Age, Marchmellow, and Max Mudie. Four amazing producers that encompass a vast array of styles. They teamed up to create Love Sick with the mission to bring the sounds of love, funk, soul, and timelessness to the table. Late last year marked the debut release for the imprint with tracks from Riskotheque & Marchmellow alongside Southbound Hangers(Screen Age & Max Mudie). It was a top-notch debut release and if you haven’t snagged that one up do so, it’s a must have! The crew is back again, with LUVSIC002 showcasing an AMAZING remix of Truth’s ‘Don’t Explain’ and ‘1-800-LOVE’ done by Riskotheque & Marchmellow. I first heard the Don’t Explain remix back in October /November of last year and I literally went mental, and have been anticipating this release ever since. Needless to say, I’m quite excited to see if finally get a release onto wax.

The original of ‘Don’t Explain’ was already an absolutely massive track. If you haven’t heard this one it was released back in 2010 on Aquatic Lab on the Puppet’s album. This is one of my many all-time favorite tracks ever written. Usually I’m a snob about remixing tracks that are already of the highest quality but, I must say, Riskotheque & Marchmellow were not fucking around when they built this remix. The interpretation takes on a completely different persona and turns into one of the most dance-friendly tracks that I’ve heard in my life. Hold tight for the second drop. The boys infuse elements from the classic 90’s house era into the present day production quality, creating feel-good vibes that can rival almost any tune written on the late. The energy is kept constant with a 4×4 kick pattern, rolling high hats, and rave stabs that incite orgasms in your ears. Like I said, hold tight for the second drop, it’s absolutely MENTAL. You will skank like no badman has ever skanked before!

Truth – Don’t Explain (Riskotheque & Marchmellow Remix)

The AA side is ‘1-800-LOVE’. This track slows down on the tempo side of things ending up in the 120-ish arena. This tune progresses with rising pads and chopped up vocals into a rolling house track with an extremely funky bassline and chords that fill the air with “sunrise at the rave” vibes. A truly beautiful track this one is. Between the claps, high hats, and the shakers this beat is laced up with rhythms and grooves that force footwork upon the people dem’. Another perfect fit for the Love Sick imprint. Have a listen:

Make sure to keep your eyes out on your favorite record store for this one! Due for release on July 2nd in all good shops. This is definitely going to be one of the better releases for the year, in my opinion.

Valentines Day, Love Sick Style

Happy valentines day everybody!  For those of you that insist on incessantly whining about about this holiday, SUCK IT UP.  Despite the days beautiful display of consumerism, deceit, and misinterpretations, valentines day is a day for lovers.  Love is one of the greatest things about being human.  Or maybe I should say the ability we have to experience/identify any sort of emotion is one of the greatest things about being human.  But that’s neither here nor there.  Let’s get back to the Love.  Valentines day can incite a lot of different reactions among those who share it with their “special someone”; excitement towards the love they have, frustration about the financial journey they must embark, or confusion about what to get, to name a few.  I feel like the whole extravagant gift thing has been taken a bit overboard nowadays but, I mean, at this point I think I would be more caught off guard if our country had a holiday in which tempting citizens with screaming deals wasn’t a major aspect.  With all the BS aside though, take the day as a day to be thankful for the loved ones you have in your life.  It’s not just a day for couples, it’s for everybody.  A lot of times people take what they have for granted and when it’s gone, it’s gone.  Let people know that they are important to you.  Relationships are an integral part of our psyche so doesn’t it seem reasonable that you would want to maintain it in a positive manner?

Mix Mondays: Weight For The Week

Hello fam!  Welcome to a new feature we plan on keeping around at Bassweight Society, ‘Mix Mondays’.  As you all know, mixes are a great way to hear new dubs and generally skank the f*ck out.  This Monday we have three featured mixes to add some low-end to your week as you transition out of the weekend.

Our first mix comes from Evergreen Forest Records and previously featured artist, Marchmellow.  This mix goes in right from the start with a big forthcoming Marchmellow track and continues on heavy, ending with some very nice Evergreen forthcomings and Marchmellow dubs.  Check out the tracklist on Soundcloud and find some new favorites!

Marchmellow – Evergreen Forest Records Mix


California based artist, Roommate, provides us with our second mix, taken from his Soundcloud page.  Roommate has been smashing it on the West Coast and throughout the U.S., all while releasing a wide variety of Bassweight approved dubs.  This mix showcases just that, as Roomates ability to create great Reggae influenced jams and Dubstep bangers is seen.  Wih 16 ORIGINAL tracks, this mix is highly recommended to kick off any day as its jah-lectrified sounds will surely diminish any feelings of angst or anxiety towards the week.  The mix puts the “Dub” into “Dubstep”.

Monday’s final mix comes from Bassweight Society’s own, Kinman.  Like the above mixes, a subwoofer is highly recommended with this one.  Kinman shows his love for the deeper sounds of Dubstep by bringing 40 minutes of non-stop DARKNESS.  Showcasing tunes from the likes of Killawatt, Thelem, Truth, and Matt-U, to name a few, this mix vibes for all the deep heads.

Feeling ‘Love Sick’ : A Look at One of Brighton’s Emerging Bass Labels.

Today we have the very special honor of interviewing with one of Brighton’s newest Bass labels, Love Sick Recordings.  Founded by Riskotheque, Marchmellow, and the Southbound Hangers(Screen Age & Mudie), this label has already been off to a great start.  Prior to starting the label,  each of these artists has had a number of releases from labels such as Disfigured Dubz, Boka, and Skint.  With that said, what can be expected other than HUGE sounds?  The label’s sound has been recognized by some of the most respected names in the scene such as: Kode9, Skream, DJ MADD, Ramadannman, N-Type, Trolley Snatcha, and Mary Anne Hobbes(And that’s just to name a few).  To top it off, they have gained a residency at HOSPITALITY, which is one of the UK’s most successful club nights run by Hospital Records.  With the label’s intention of side-stepping “the more aggressive styles of dubstep”,  they have made a great appeal to “educated music lovers”.  Given the versatility of the genre and Love Sicks production abilities there is no way to identify a distinct sound within the label.  Their ability to incorporate influences from a variety of genres only further accentuates the bright future that this label has.  In the words of the label, “Love Sick is a bass music label with one thing on it’s collective mind……Love!”  Make sure you keep your eyes out for these guys because they’re sure to turn heads, as they already have.

BWS was fortunate enough to get a couple questions answered from these guys aside from their busy schedules:

BWS: What are Love Sick’s  plans for 2011 and 2012?

  •  Love Sick: For 2011 -2012 we really plan to build the Love Sick label/brand. This will include more releases of course, initially from us but with a view to building a strong roster of new talent too, and all within the context we have already established for Love Sick Recordings. We are considering organising Love Sick events too… club nights with a musical policy directly related to the labels output… quality music for music lovers. Maybe even touring with the label too. Our weekly radio shows on the Electric Sound Stage channel of iHeart Radio have been incredibly well received in the U.S. so this could more than possibly lead to some sort of American tour… Watch this space!

BWS:  Much respect for keeping the vinyl culture alive.  What are some of the challenges that come along with pressing vinyls in today digital age?  How do you overcome them?

  •  Love Sick: In this throw-away digital age we think its important to give people the option to buy a product that is more than just a bunch of 1s and 0s on their hard drive… something they can hold, collect, treasure and show off to friends! Obviously we would never disregard the digital format as many people don’t have the luxury of a turntable these days but in the same way we wouldn’t want to leave out those that still love the whole thing of collecting and playing vinyl. Infact we want to encourage this and to this end we will be adding extra bonuses for those buying the limited vinyl, to show that we appreciate their support…. and we have some really cool things lined up, believe me!

BWS: Who were some of your biggest musical influences growing up?

  • Love Sick: All four of us have very different musical backgrounds. I (Riskotheque) grew up with rave culture and was influenced very early on by this but having worked in an indie record store for 6 years my influences have diversified hugely. It would be boring to mention them all… just imagine lots of great music in the melting pot of my brain and you might understand.

BWS: If you had to describe your label’s sound to someone who has never heard ‘dubstep’ or electronic music, how would you do so?

  • Love Sick: It’s a combination of the soundtrack to a 70’s porno flick, a Woody Allen romantic farce and that bit in Bambi when his mother dies.

BWS: What about the ‘deeper’ sounds of dubstep appeal to you?

  • Love Sick: We love the longevity of the so called ‘deeper’ sound. The fact that you can keep coming back to this music without tiring of it and discover hidden details and intricacies that maybe you hadn’t noticed on the first few listens. It’s music that gives the listener space to attach their own meanings and emotions rather than thrusting it forcefully down their throats.

The labels first release, LUVSIC001, came out TODAY!!!!, November 14th in 12″ and digital format.  You can find the it at almost every major site such as Beatport, Chemical Records, Surus, and Juno.  This release contains ‘All Alone” on the A side, which is produced by Marchmellow and Riskotheque.  On the flip you’ll find ‘You Don’t Understand’ by Southbound Hangers.  Both of these tunes exemplify great production skills, and exhibit a sense of maturity in the sound that is hard to find these days.  Support the atrists and BUY these tunes!
