D-Operation Drop – ‘Slammer’ EP [Vulcan Audio]

DOperation Drop Slammer Art

Ez everyone!

Hope everything is good.  Out to everyone who is in the trenches with finals at university right now – I FEEL you.  Anyway, I’ve got some time to kill and wanted to give some love to a killer release set to drop late December.  Vulcan Audio has been on somewhat of a hiatus since their 006 with Jafu (which was DOPE so check it out if you slept on it) but have returned to the frontline with their recent signing of the Italian dreadnaught, D-Operation Drop.  I would be hard-pressed to believe anybody at this point if they said they hadn’t heard at least one tune from DOD.  This small army of friends has been pushing out tunes and getting signed like madmen.  Recent releases with Wheel & Deal, Bacon Dubs, Redshift One and forthcomings due on Vulcan, Subaltern Records, and NoMad highlight the virtuosity this group has displayed over the past year.

Their ‘Slammer’ EP showcases percussive precision, slumping sub-frequencies, and the signature array of dystopian synth programming that would put a thizz face on Rob Ford quicker than a 10-cloud to his lungs.  ‘The Addition’ stands out as my favorite beat off the EP; it’s energetic kick and pumping sub get my blood flowing – definitely one to engage the dance!  The collaboration with Piezo, ‘Trench’, is another one that gets a massive salute.  The swing in this one is absolutely top-notch and each time I listen to it, I find nearly every appendage on my body subconsciously synchronizing itself to the beat.  Bacon Dubs bossman Sparxy closes the EP out with his remix of ‘Slammer’, twisting sounds into an unfathomable dimension, causing a thorough consideration to whether or not you’re still human.  This guy knows how to bring the energy.

Sparxy – Gravitation EP [PORK009]

rsz_pork009-final

“Sparxy is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in dubstep and UK bass music, and with this EP he shows no sign of letting up on momentum.”

What’s good fam’.

Today I want showcase the ninth release on quickly rising label Bacon Dubs.  Since early 2011 the imprint has been releasing music from some of the scenes most deadly newcomers like DubApes, Reamz, and label boss Sparxy.  Here at Bassweight Society we’ve covered more than a few of the tracks put out on Bacon Dubs simply because the production quality is top-notch and many of the beats are of the few that find a common ground between foundation style bassweight and the aggressive nature of mid-range basslines.  PORK009 is another EP from the hands of Sparxy with collaborations from Fused Forces and Mannix.  There’s also a remix of Sparxy’s 006 release ‘Mr. Robot’ from newcomer Area Zero.  The beats from this release have been receiving support across the board from some of the most influential DJ’s in the underground – Skream & Benga, N-Type, Truth, Soap Dodgers, and J:Kenzo to name a few.  It’s honestly no surprise that this release is receiving such a high amount of praise because each of the tracks are absolute rinsers, each having a very unique structure and sound – ranging from 4×4 to groove swung half-step.

Gravitation ||

As the releases title track it opens up the mood quite nicely with its swinging grooves and droid-like mids.  Placing very minor percussive elements intricately throughout the mix really fills out the ethos of the track.  This is a perfect beat to grab the crowds attention and let them know you’re not here to mess about.

The Guardian ft. Mannix ||

This beat fit is nothing short of a 4×4 techno stomper!  the clean sub hits, pounding tribal kick patterns, and overall energy of create a serious rave vibe.  The tone of the vocal sample used perfectly round off the beat by complimenting its sinister presence.  The reverb-drenched, but still dry, hit of the snare add a great high frequency element to keep the mix fresh throughout.

Leviathan ft. Fused Forces ||

This collaboration with Fused Forces is without a doubt one of the largest tunes I have heard thus far in 2012.  The track title couldn’t be better suited for the monstrous presence of gritty reeses and sci-fi score eeriness heard in distant chimes lurking beneath the mix.  And f*cking hell – that kick drum!  Seriously, the variety of modulations applied to the basslines in this beat are beyond me.  This is one of those that can honestly send blood rushing through your veins in the same fashion our sympathetic nervous system would after seeing a Bengal Tiger turn the corner on us.  Flat-out mental.

DubApes – We Are Monkeys EP (PORK007)

Oi oi!  What’s good with the people dem’.

Back from another weekend – unfortunately.  We really to need to have at least ONE 3-day weekend every month, get your votes in.  Anyway…

Hopefully you guys remember the badman Sparxy that we did a review about back in May, with his ‘Mr. Robot’ EP (peep it here).  Well today I want to take a look at another massive EP that was just released today on his Bacon Dubs label.  The EP is called ‘We Are Apes’ and hails from the Austrian duo, DubApes.  I had absolutely no idea who these guys were prior to this release, but you can count on the fact that I have them locked in my sight from here on out.  Marking the 7th release for Bacon Dubs, this 4-track piece of music comes hard with sub-flexing pressure and just the right amount of mid-range frequencies – something fresh and welcomed.

The EP is introduced by the track ‘We Are Monkeys’.  The track is eased in with ambient pads, eastern vibed winds, and harmonic droplets, all leading to a sound byte that clearly gave rise to the tracks name.  Once the tune drops it’s a groove ridden journey through halfstep madness.  The atmospherics in this tune really complement the vibe, giving depth and mysticism to this stomper.  The second track of the EP, ‘Africa Calling’, is without a doubt my (and seemingly everyone elses) favorite tune off of the EP.  This tribal bit can really transport ones mind into a primal state.  The intro is drenched with ceremonial grunts and chants that build up to a pounding kick riddim’ back by convulsing sub-bass lines and intricately placed percussives.  I honestly have to say that this is one of my favorite tunes released thus far in 2012 – absolutely massive.  And just when you think it’s finished, the second drop throws a twist that will seduce each and every bit of your mind and body.  Jeeeeeeeeeez.  Following Africa Calling is ‘Hanuman Langures’.  This one is probably my #2 for the EP.  There’s just something about it that sets it apart from all other sounds.  The pressure behind the kicks, the eastern mysticism, the carefully placed amen breaks, it just takes form so beautifully.  The DubApes incorporate a multitude of influences flawlessly, forging ahead with a very distinct sound repertoire.  The EP’s final track is ‘Pandora’s Sorrows’.  A beautiful way to finish the release off.  This track is the epitome of uniting the frequency spectrum in a proper fashion.  Hard-hitting sub pressure sits tightly behind modulated growls and emotive wind instruments.  The subs FLEX hard on this track.  Check the clips below!

.

I find it pretty much fail-safe to say that the DubApes will be on a quick rise in the ranks throughout the remainder of the year, and into the future.  Their styles are a refreshing reminder that the possibilities within the 140 arena are truly endless – the best thing about dubstep.

You can purchase the EP on Juno and Beatport so get on it and show these guys some love!  Purchase links below…
