‘The Uprising’ EP [UA004]


This past Monday Uprise Audio released another brilliant collection of music, this time in the form of a 2 x 12” compilation that showcased artists who will be releasing further sounds under the Uprise imprint.  Eddy and Verity have harnessed quite the theme within their imprint’s name.  If the consistency and quality of sounds put forth since the label’s inception isn’t testament enough to the dedication and drive of Uprise CEO’s and the artists they sign, ‘The Uprising’ EP will obliterate any questions or doubts.  To make things clear:  Uprise Audio is not f*cking around and they will continue to assemble an army of sonic samurais, while in the process garnering acclaim and loyalty from the dubstep collective.

UA004 introduces 5 new artists to the Uprise roster – Klax, Disonata, Wayfarer, Quantum Soul, and Chewie – alongside CEO Seven, and returning heavyweight Dubtek.  The tracks uphold a strong sense of meaning to the EP’s title ‘Uprising’.  These songs are ridden with aggressive and intentional surges of authority, or perhaps the complete disregard of it.  It’s as if the songs speak for themselves in saying “We are Uprise, and we’ve come to dominate the dance.”  The first three tracks (‘Go To War’, ‘Lost Souls’, and ‘Shamen’) immediately set this precedent with the thundering drums of Seven and Klax & Disonata, reinforced by the unblunted stabs that Wayfarer has programmed to slice through the sound field.  Moods are lightened with the addition by Quantum Soul, as ‘Underworld’ provides a landscape more suited for the shoulda-rolla skank-out sessions with rolling drums and undeniable groove.  Chewie teams up with Dubtek to close things out and provide a  soundtrack for the march of a victorious but spiritually beaten army, returning home over the bodies of fallen comrades.











The release is available exclusively through Beatport in digital format until next Monday, when all digital retailers will have it and the vinyl hits the shelves.  DON’T SLEEP.

Demon – ‘Judgement Day’ EP [MUD015]


This past Monday saw another installment in the M.U.D. legacy take form in three tracks from Demon, the label’s founder and head honcho.  Raff has taken he and his team along an immense journey from the depths of the UK underground to a reach that is now globally recognized.  Demon just recently made his debut appearance in the United States, playing Sub.Mission (Denver) with Youngsta and at Subverse in New York, giving the stateside fam’ some first-hand dosage of the ‘M.U.D. life’ musical values.  Unfortunately he wasn’t able to make it out to Cali so I didn’t get to catch him, but I’m sure people are going to be left fiending after that little taste, and we’ll have him out here again in no time.

As the momentum continues in the unrelenting release schedule of the Macabre Unit collective, Demon cements his feet at the forefront of his label with three immaculate pieces of music, each tackling separate realms within the dark and twisted canopy of dubstep.  ‘Judgement Day’ rudely sets the stage for the EP.  The eastern vocals will instantly hook your attention as it provides some sense of reassurance, despite the beats overall aesthetic of impending doom.  The jungle breaks programmed halfway through add a refreshing flavor before the song harks back down it’s path of stuttered drums and sinister pads……. ‘Manipulation’ ft. Beezy is quite what you would expect, I’m sure.  Demon’s clean production abilities laced with Beezy’s highly-acclaimed vocal styles, generally containing lyrical content along the lines of brainwash, new world order, disease, government corruption, and various other happy elements that come along with the human experience 😉  The beat carries a heavy half-step skeleton, with LFO mod on the sub helping it pulsate through the space left by the drums.  Beezy’s voice is just as G as it gets – always.  The closing track for the EP, ‘Bad Trip’, is my favorite off the release.  The lead synth progression immediately had me dialed into this one.  The amount of detail that went into this beat just seems mental.  There are so many subtle components within, tailing kick drums and sub notes to create an unrivaled amount of groove and bounce throughout the beat.  The panning creates a sense of disorientation as sounds are constantly weaving back-and-forth within the mix.  I imagine it would do the same amount of damage to the dance floor as Seven’s ‘Picture This’ off his Evolution LP released towards the end of last year.

Truth – ‘Iron Lung/Medusa’ [NMN007]


EZ fam’, hope you’ve all been well since the last time I checked in here!  I’ve got a rather large release to highlight today, coming from the New Moon Recordings imprint based out of Poland.  The label has been putting out phenomenal music since it’s inception towards the latter part of 2010; signing artists like Killawatt & Thelem, Biome, Perverse, and Phaeleh.  Their seventh release is in the form of a 12″ single from the globally acclaimed duo – Truth.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, these two have perfectly embodied, in my mind, how to go about taking an underground sound and creating a seismic commotion within the mainstream market.  With recent endeavors ranging from launching a new label – Defy Recordings, covering two part of the globe at any given time, launching a club monthly here in the Golden State (Deep, Dark, & Dangerous in San Francisco, CA), and putting out a steady string of releases, it is truly inspiring to see what the team’s evolution has accomplished thus far.

Truth’s first release for 2013 finds itself lurking among the outermost fringes of sanity, plunging through sadistic atmospheres that find themselves engulfed with spacious drum grooves and tectonic sub-pressure.  ‘Iron Lung’ sees the duo incorporate their notorious affinity to vocal progressions into a seemingly void realm of swinging half-step percussion and sinister horns.  ‘Medusa’ pulls out a much more desolate aesthetic than the former, with drawn out pads, pulverant bass lines, and elusive atmospheric scores that have a dissociative effect on the mind.  The power of the sub built for this beat is genuinely one of the most momentous I’ve heard, I can only imagine the feeling running through my flesh when standing in front of a top-notch club system.  This track is a perpetual state of falling, through a dissonant abyss of sound design.

West Coast Weight: Kelly Dean’s ‘Firewall’ EP [SMOG025]


Big up fam’, thanks for checking in again!  We’re already two weeks into the new year and there has been a solid amount of music to hit the shelves: DJ Madd’s remix of  Candyman’s ‘Killa Sound’, Killawatt & Ipman’s ‘Warehouse Dub/Single Entity’, Boddika’s ‘Soul What VIP’, Booka Shade’s 3-track release on Blaufield, and Bungle’s ‘Aura/Astral Travel’, to name a few.  If you thought that 2012 was an amazing year for bass music you’re right but, 2013 is going to be that much better!

Today marks the drop of California native Kelly Dean’s ‘Firewall EP’ on Smog records.  Kelly Dean is one of many producers within the deep dubstep scene who have recently been cementing the U.S. onto the radar of bassweight enthusiasts across the globe.  Yes, we’ve always had heads like Matty G, Starkey, OSC, Babylon System, and Roommate (among others), but the numbers are growing and the ratio of top-notch UK:US producers finally seems to be evening out a bit.

It should come as no surprise that one of the one of the nation’s leading producers rolls deep with one of the nation’s strongest and longest-running dubstep nights/labels – Smog.  This release sees Kelly Dean take on his role in the SMOG fam’ as the deeper and darker proponent with his sweeping reese bass lines, eye-closing sub bass, eerie atmospherics, and generally minimalist philosophy on production.  The EP also bolsters remixes from Chestplate Records up-and-comer District, as well as a remix by Drumcell of the infamous Los Angeles underground crew: Droid Behavior.  It is without a doubt an EP that should not be slept on.  I was lucky enough to grab a few words with Kelly in regards to this release so take a read below while you preview his ‘Firewall’ EP:


BWS:  So how long has this EP been in the works for?

Its been over a year that’s for sure.  I actually played these tunes in an earlier form at the SMOG 5 year party.  They have transformed over the years and matured into what you hear today.  They actually feel like little kids to me at this point.  HAHA.

BWS:  What can the listeners expect to hear from this project?

This EP has a much more mature sound to it.  Take “Samurai” for instance.  The track’s vocal is actually me.  But I took the quote from Hagakure : Book of the Samurai which is a practical and spiritual guide for a warrior, drawn from a collection of commentaries by the Samurai Yamamoto Tsunetomo from 1709 to 1716.  So the historical context of this tune is pretty strong, and I believe the vibe of the song is consistent with that theme.

BWS:  Do you have a personal favorite off the release?

“Samurai” and “Firewall” are my favorites mainly because of the ongoing theme.  Its a lot of fun creating a song that has somewhat of a script, almost like your scoring a movie. Those tunes have little FX sprinkled in that hint at the track titles.

BWS:  Which beat did you have the hardest time completing?

Samurai was the hardest by far.  Its the longest of the lot and the structure is different then your average dubstep tune   .  It starts off dropping into almost a garage drum pattern.  Each 16 bars it changes slightly with the percussion slowly morphing into a standard dubstep beat.  The vocal was also quite a challenge.  This is the first time I have put my own vocals into a tune that has been released.

BWS:  Any shout outs to those that helped make this happen?

Everyone supporting me since I started making music has been a MASSIVE help!  Producing music is one of those things that even the littlest bit of motivation from your peers can generate a big response in your productivity and imagination, which really helps with the writing process.  Drew & Danny at SMOG are huge in that department and this EP would not have been possible without them.  Also huge shouts to District and Drumcell for banging out unreal remixes!  Its a honor to have them on board for this project.
