Demon – ‘Judgement Day’ EP [MUD015]

MUD015-v04

This past Monday saw another installment in the M.U.D. legacy take form in three tracks from Demon, the label’s founder and head honcho.  Raff has taken he and his team along an immense journey from the depths of the UK underground to a reach that is now globally recognized.  Demon just recently made his debut appearance in the United States, playing Sub.Mission (Denver) with Youngsta and at Subverse in New York, giving the stateside fam’ some first-hand dosage of the ‘M.U.D. life’ musical values.  Unfortunately he wasn’t able to make it out to Cali so I didn’t get to catch him, but I’m sure people are going to be left fiending after that little taste, and we’ll have him out here again in no time.

As the momentum continues in the unrelenting release schedule of the Macabre Unit collective, Demon cements his feet at the forefront of his label with three immaculate pieces of music, each tackling separate realms within the dark and twisted canopy of dubstep.  ‘Judgement Day’ rudely sets the stage for the EP.  The eastern vocals will instantly hook your attention as it provides some sense of reassurance, despite the beats overall aesthetic of impending doom.  The jungle breaks programmed halfway through add a refreshing flavor before the song harks back down it’s path of stuttered drums and sinister pads……. ‘Manipulation’ ft. Beezy is quite what you would expect, I’m sure.  Demon’s clean production abilities laced with Beezy’s highly-acclaimed vocal styles, generally containing lyrical content along the lines of brainwash, new world order, disease, government corruption, and various other happy elements that come along with the human experience 😉  The beat carries a heavy half-step skeleton, with LFO mod on the sub helping it pulsate through the space left by the drums.  Beezy’s voice is just as G as it gets – always.  The closing track for the EP, ‘Bad Trip’, is my favorite off the release.  The lead synth progression immediately had me dialed into this one.  The amount of detail that went into this beat just seems mental.  There are so many subtle components within, tailing kick drums and sub notes to create an unrivaled amount of groove and bounce throughout the beat.  The panning creates a sense of disorientation as sounds are constantly weaving back-and-forth within the mix.  I imagine it would do the same amount of damage to the dance floor as Seven’s ‘Picture This’ off his Evolution LP released towards the end of last year.

The release dropped last Monday, March 25th, and is available in digital format only.  You can snag the release from all major online retailers but below are a couple links to do so:

Demon – Blood Sport / Intensity [ICU006]

If you haven’t seen the name ‘Demon’ circulating at some point or another over the past few months, you’ve definitely been smoking way too many bath salts.  He has, alongside his hefty crew, been infiltrating the 140 scene with pumping sub-bass notes, and his uniquely twisted mid-range filter modulations.  As founder of the M.U.D/M.U.V (Macabre Unit Digital/Vinyl, respectively) he has been able to aggressively make his presence known over the past year.  Signing releases to heavyweights such as Biome, DCult, and Perverse – to name a few, the represented sound has gained a very strong and dedicated following.

Demon takes a breather from releasing on M.U.D/M.U.V for a brief moment with tunes ‘Blood Sport’ and ‘Intensity’, as they have been signed to ICU Audio.  Both of these beats take a Freddy Krueger approach to their sound design, and will likely leave you wondering what the f*ck just happened!  I am really happy with the way this release represents a ‘sound’ or ‘vibe’, as a whole.  It’s not just two tracks thrown together as an ‘A’ and ‘B’, rather two tracks built with the intentions of being released together.  It could be said that between these two tracks there is a story being told.  Some might argue my claim but if you play these tracks back-to-back in the mix you’ll understand what I’m talking about.  You see this often when someone plans on building an album, but no so much with a 12″ – I’m really feeling this approach, whether intended or not.

Blood Sport ||

As this one creeps in with distant tribal chants and delayed synth chords there is a mystic energy being built up.  Then the track is stripped and the only thing left is a swelling chant.  You’d think, at first listen, you know what’s about to come next.  For f*cks sake, you probably couldn’t have been more wrong!  The way this beats evolves from a colorful meditation vibe, into a depth-charge of sub weight, built beneath a swinging pattern of kick and snare, made me double glance at my iTunes thinking I somehow switched the track.  This is a half-step riddim’ meant to tear the roof off clubs.  As the track evolves even further, the colorful synths make their way back into the sound field and beautifully integrate ‘tribal’ and, so called, ‘dungeon’ sounds.  Hold tight for the second drop!

Intensity ||

These mid-range bass notes just tear through your mind!  The way he has chosen to build upon the grooves and transitions of this track victims screaming adds an…. errr… well, ironically, ‘intensity’ to the composition, that makes you feel like you are right there – living inside the beat.  Upon the beat hitting its full potential, your body will be surged with an innate urge  to relentlessly roll your body back and forth to bouncy sound design of this one.  It’s a very powerful track, to say the least, that nicely embodies Demon’s style/approach by showcasing his extremely dark and energetic grooves.

Biome – Two Way EP (BLACKBOX029)

Bless everybody.  Hope all is well with the fam’.  Today I wanted to take some time out to highlight the recent EP released by Biome.  As if this man has not been absolutely slaying bass bins for the past 6 months (at least), he has made his presence even more visible with this latest release on Black Box.  With one of the hardest sounds in the deeper side of the 140 arena, Biome has carved out his place like a force that cannot be reckoned with.  I have promoted much of his music within the time span of Bassweight Society’s existence and he is definitely one of my favorite producers.  This 4 Track 2 x 12″ release sees a more calm Biome (or at least that’s how I’ve perceived it) than his recent work with the Macabre Unit crew and his release on New Moon not too long ago – I find it very refreshing.  The Two Way EP is an excellent addition to the Black Box discography, holding true to the imprints sound.

Reality || Vinyl, Digital

This beat starts off with some beautiful atmospherics and quickly progresses into a pressure-ridden halfstep masterpiece.  The space utilized in between each bass element creates grooves that would cause a paraplegic to off his/her chair and straight mash the dance.  I was instantly hooked by the eerie pads used in the track and I’m sure each of you will find an element that tickles your fancy within this one.

Inner Mind || Vinyl, Digital

This tune embodies the “calm” Biome that I spoke of in the introduction of this feature.  Preceding this release I’ve seen Biome on very high-energy trend, utilizing extremely heavy tribal-styled percussion to keep the dance inna’ zone.  Inner Mind utilizes calming vocals, eyes down piano chords, and atmospherics that all equate to a brilliant work of art.  I find this tune to be extremely peaceful, and to be honest, thought-provoking.  I say thought-provoking because each time I play this one I can’t help but reminisce on past memories, analyze current situations, and just think.  I’m going to have to say that this is my persy off the EP.

Charged || Vinyl, Digital

In uniform with the calmer vibe of the EP, ‘Charged’ keeps the beat slow but the vibes large.  Biome’s unmatched ability to modulate growling basslines is apparent in this stomper as the tune is constantly interchanging between them.  The snare hit in this beat really makes me exaggerate my body movements as it is crisp in it’s strike and fades flawlessly, with just the right amount of reverb.

Two Way || Vinyl, Digital

To wrap up the release is ‘Two Way’.  This one is for the steppers!  A very clean and constant kick drum floods the sound field while an array of hats and snares compliment the grooves.  For some reason I picture a mad scientist frantically searching for a lost potion when I listen to this tune.  Haha, yeah, I’m weird.

Many of you have probably already purchased this but, if you haven’t, DO IT!  It’s available at all good record shops and online stores.  You can preview all of the tunes down below via the Black Box Soundcloud page.

Hope you enjoy the sounds!  Support the artists, show them some love and most importantly, DON’T PIRATE MUSIC.  Be sure to check later this week, most likely Thursday, as I have a very special feature/interview with a Bristolian producer that has been turning heads on the late!  Big up to all the readers, your support means the world to me.  Until next time…

Ey Fam,

Shout outs to all BWS followers keeping it locked. We hope you enjoy jamming out to the tunes we post as much as we do. Thursday’s here which means tomorrow night we party, so in honor of that we’re gonna bring you some tunes to get you ready for the weekend.

First tune is one that’s been in circulation for some time now finding its way into the nooks and crannies of radio stations here and there. A large one from N-Type & Surge entitled Triangles set to release on Wheel & Deal sometime in the next couple months as part of an N-Type & Surge EP. Sorry about the vocals over the track, but if you listen past that, you’ll recognize that mega bass N-Type’s been cranking out for years. With fat smashing snares and scattered vocal echoes over a mega wobble this tune is bound to be one that will light up the dance. Enjoy.

The next tune we want to bring to your attention is one that’s been receiving much chatter around the internet, a tune we’d expect many of you heads to have your hands on, but one very worthy of further attention. The tune titled Classified by Organics was recently handed out for free via the Hedmuk Blog. This lurker is sure to make your nose itch if listened to with a proper sub. Quality production. Make sure to head over to Hedmuk and grab your free download and big up their operation over there. Here’s a link to their site ‪http://hedmuk.blogspot.com/.

The last one here is one sure to make you skank into the weekend. A monster of a tune from Anex with Demon on the remix a tune entitled Delusions. Getting airtime on both Youngsta’s and Distance’s Rinse.FM shows this is a massive one from upcoming producer Anex. So large, you hear the MC calling to pull it back, make sure to crank this one up. With a tribal drum intro into a half step stomper this one will surely blow ears. Whatever you’re doing this weekend be sure to enjoy yourself to this tune.

Hope that eases you into the weekend. Big up fam spread the love.

Don’t be a gangsta’, dance like one!
