Rewind Wednesday – Origins of the Wob

Mary Anne Hobbes's - Dubstep Warz

Sup fam! You know the drill by now. Wednesday = legendary dubstep tunes. This week features a few tracks that will show the “Origins of the Wob” from it’s homely beginnings as a wump in the mix, to an all out dragon-beast destined to oscillate its way into the charts.

We all know that infamous wobble didn’t just fall out of thin air and land on Skream’s hard drive. The ‘Wobble’, or Low Frequency Oscillation (LFO) was a concentrated effort understood and utilized by early dubstep producers. Guy’s like The Others, Skream and Coki were boosting the Mid’s and cranking that LFO to great success with record sales and more importantly, dancefloor results. Take a journey with the Wob and see what you like better, the old or the new.

First up is Skream & Cluekid’s – ‘Sandsnake’. The first release on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz label, Sandsnake couples the amen-style breaks of Drum and Bass and an ever-present wobble to create an absolute dance floor killer. Released in August 07 – this tune turned many heads and opened many doors for the sound known as “dubstep”.

PS – Both Skream and Cluekid have been putting out much BWS approved material in 2011. Make sure to check them both out in 2012.

Hopping right into the second tune, Stenchman unleashes ‘What the Future Holds’ and the almost formulaic ‘epic drop’ that is so often reproduced nowadays. The wobs are complementary to the gritty saw that adds a groundbreaking element to a tune that could have easily inspired the word “Bassface”.

XSDubz – 2007

We’re ending it huge with our last track. Coki‘s – Spongebob, will honestly change the way you think about dubstep. It was released in ’07 under the uber-chill DMZ banner, yet it is one of the craziest-wobbliest tunes out there. We might ask “How did it make the cut?”. Well, it was one of the first of it’s kind, and promptly received a rewind 98% of the time it was dropped. This tune broke the ice with wobbles and absolutely dove in!

Look at these people going BUCK WILD to it in 2007. (Below)

Cool, well we hope you enjoyed the tunes and noticed their similarities and the influence they hold today. These classics helped blaze the trail for the wobble and still stand up to big tunes today. Bump em!

See you next Wednesday!

Forthcomings – Releases Worth Waiting For

Hey Fam,

Hope you all had a nice relaxing weekend. With 2012 just kicking off, it’s setting up to be a big year for dubstep music. Today we wanted to bring to your attention a few releases set to come out in the next month or two that we feel you should be keeping your eyes on.

The first release coming out January 23 on New Moon Recordings, is a massive one by Killawatt & Thelem. As the third release for New Moon Recordings, NMN003, this team up between Killawatt & Thelem is large as usual. The first tune titled Reasons To Worry is a serious lurker pushing the system with low end pressure and just the right flavor of bongo drums that Killawatt loves incorporating into his tunes. The second tune entitled Swarf, is a collaboration between Killawatt & Thelem. With a dark intro leading into echoing drums, it feels as if you’re walking down some dark alley not sure about whats around the next corner. As the tune drops you’re met with just the right amount of growling bass, sure to light up any mega sound system. With a carefully calculated mixture of snares and tribal sounding bongo patterns, the tune would definitely be one you’d want be right standing right next to the subs at, for any live show. The last tune, Too Dark, is a classic Killawatt bomb, with a heavy intro and even heavier drop. The tune is anthemic in a way, one that would mesmerize you into a trance before the drop. When it drops the quick kick drum makes it an absolute dance floor skanker. Make sure to big up the artists and grab this release when it comes out next Monday.

The next release we have for you is a huge one and one that comes from a West Coast producer! Antiserum & Ill-Esha team up for 2 spectacular collabs. Set to release on Subway Music on January 30, this synth filled goodness brings a large purple flavor to the table. The first tune Overflow is a dance floor smasher. It starts with a beautiful string intro, and drops into a large synth smashing bass frenzy. With celestial sounds sprinkled throughout, this one is guaranteed to receive lots of attention. The second tune, Lightning, is one of the most beautiful productions of the last few months. Repping the west coast in wicked flavor, Antiserum and Ill-Esha produce a beautiful synth riff, guaranteed to be heard on dance floors from Europe to The Playa at Burning Man. Stay up on this and be sure to get your hands on the 12″ when it’s released. Big up Antiserum & Ill-Esha!

The last release we want you to keep your eyes on, is a collaboration from the masters of bass TMSV & DJ Madd titled Difference/(J:Kenzo Remix). This heavily anticipated tune, finding a home on industry heavyweight label Black Box, is one that’s been floating around for some time now. Receiving serious attention from dubstep don Youngsta, Difference is a high energy low level lurker, a true example of perfectly executed production. On the flip, J:Kenzo adds his flavor demonstrating his skills as a heavy hitter in the scene. Set to drop on Feb 27 as part of the triple XXX series on 12″ wax cut as a 10″ this one will surely sell out so make sure to preorder yourself a copy.

That’s a wrap. Stay up on these releases and make sure to get at us about any release you feel we need to be watching for in the next few months. We’ll be back tomorrow!

Future Jungle – An Introduction

Hello once again everybody.  By now, you have all most likely broken your new year’s eve resolutions so….cheers! Going into 2012 we have a lot of sounds, artists, and labels to be looking out for, and at BWS we like to focus our efforts on doing just that. Today’s post is a brief introduction into future jungle, a sound that is gradually gaining popularity and still has room for growth and evolution.

Future jungle – also dubbed as 140 jungle – seems to make sense to dubstep enthusiasts, and you’ll see why. Future j’s upbeat sound takes from Jungle’s use of pacey amen breaks, set at a lower tempo – 140bpm. It also revives a lot of other sounds from early jungle such as speedy chord progressions, punchy sub hits laced with rolling basslines and the essential ragga vocal. When combined successfully the tracks create an atmosphere of a smoky, lazer-lined warehouse packed at 4.a.m. One artist who would be headlining this rave is Arc 88.

Take a minute or two to explore his Soundcloud especially his most recent track, ‘Pelican’ and his release on Terrain Records, ‘2 Many’. Both tunes exemplify what we think is a good representation of the 140 lovechild of jungle and dubstep.

Arc88 – 2 Many

Larger artists are embracing the sound as well. Check out this 145 bpm Goldie remix of Joker‘s ‘On My Mind’ ft William Cartwright:

Hopefully these tracks took you back in time, and now you’re looking forward to the sounds to come, and remember, this is just and introduction to sound that is still largely undefined (we’re still hesitant about sticking a name on it). We’ll be back next week with more tunes and some firsthand insight from artists themselves. Stay Tuned!

To wrap up this post we have a special Future Jungle mix from local Santa Barbara artist and selecta – Archive. We asked him to put this mix together for us because he’s been pushing the sound in his sets, and is a great resource when finding new tracks and artists. Archive’s appreciation for 140 Jungle stems from his deep jungle/drum and bass roots and his love for deep sub heavy dubstep. Please give the mix a listen, it is absolute FIRE, no joke! Tracks are posted on his Soundcloud, and check back in a week for a follow up post.

Rewind Wednesday! Old School Jams that Still BUMP!

BIGGUPS Everyone! By now you should be used to our Rewind Wednesdays and hopefully are looking forward to ’em! Sometimes its a stretch to remember the old tunes that were favorites and dance floor smashers, but we at BWS try to refresh our readers with absolute JAMS from the past.

First up needs no explanation, Benga & Coki’s – Night, still crushes dance floors to this day! This tune arguably was one of the first dubstep tunes to cross the boundary from the small niche it was, to a much larger and diverse audience. With one of the catchiest hooks in all of electronic music, it’s no surprise that this tune solidified both Benga and Coki’s names within the dubstep scene. Check it out below.

Second tune is a personal favorite (Shice) and is great for anyone who likes lasers, zaps, beeps, etc. In fact, this is THE tune for lasers, zaps and general mind expansion/explosion. It comes to us from Zomby, remixed by the great Rustie, and is the infamous “Spliff Dub”. It’s sample, which recommends “one spliff a day”  is highly recognizable and frankly speaks the truth. This tune released in 2008 on Hyperdub is an all around slammer, great for kicking back with a spliff at the pad or bouncing around like a madman at the club!

Our third and final tune of the day comes to us from Juju remixed by Komonazmuk in 2007 from SF based label NarcoHZ. “Punks”  was a tune rinsed in many sets of the year and still hopefully gets spins cause its wicked! It’s swinging drums and punchy bass make it an easy decision for any DJ to let it rip on the dancefloor. The tunes darker vibe, pitched down samples and subtle wobble give it great character, and made it an obvious choice for our Rewind Wednesday! Give’r a listen, let us know what you think!

Hope you all liked the post, and DJ’s don’t be afraid to play older tunes! Make sure to check out these artists, as they are still making great music as well. Also check our previous post and make sure you got all of the Christmas Freebies given out over the Holidays, you do not want to miss those!

Skank it EZ!

Christmas Freebies!

What is up, children of Jah.  Well Christmas has just passed and, as usual, there has been a great number of artists that have been generous enough to give the people FREE tunes.  We want to just take a second and truly commend these people.  This is how they make their living, and the fact that they are giving away free songs is one of the most selfless things a musician can do.  Too many people overlook the dedication, effort, and sacrifice that goes into each tune that a producer writes.  You should really think twice about about clicking that link next time you stumble upon an illegal download.  Unless you are that kind of person that enjoys stealing money from hardworking individuals.  But if that’s the case, FUCK OFF.  We have four different bundles of tunes today for you all.  One is hailing from the boys at Chestplate Records, and contains 4 very amazing tunes from the likes of DistanceDistrict, and Sleeper.  The second one is a free tune from the Soap Dodgers.  Third in line we have a free EP from the extremely talented TMSV.  Lastly, we have the FINAL FREEIZM that will ever be released, according to Skream.  The release from Skream is an absolute gem.  It contains tracks that he made while still in his teen years and never released.  Really sick OG vibes on this one.

Please go out and personally thank these artists for their generosity!  If you have not already showed support on their pages, please go out and do that as well!  Massive outs the all the above from us at Bassweight Society, we will be reppin’ you guys hard all of 2012!

Alright people that’s what we got for you today!  Just a short and sweet post for today.  Enjoy the freebies, and like we said please go out and thank/support these artists for the endless amount of hours they put into making music that makes us feel good.

We’ll see all you guys on Wednesday.

To the Gods.
