John Matrix: The Pentinent Man EP (INNA008)

What up people.  Eluded by the title, today, we have a look into Inna Riddim’s newest addition to the roster, John Matrix.  The Pentiment Man EP will hit the stores today, February 10, so make sure to snag your copy of it!  Hailing from Manchester, Matrix brings heavy interpretations of the dark, minimalist styles within dubstep.   Having a well-rooted involvement in the Manchester scene with things like his earlier days on Unity Radio and his current residency with the Deadbeats Collective, Matrix is a well-seasoned contender.  He has dabbled in producing a plethera of styles within the bass scene which has given him the ability to be very versatile with his incorporation of influences.  This EP is filled with rolling low-end frequencies, shattering snare hits, and killer soundscapes.  Setting the mark as Inna Riddims 8th release (INNA008), Matrix exhibits a very complimenting style to the labels vibe.  ‘Ain’t Changing’ starts things off.  Coming at you right from the beginning with an energetic vocal sample that prefaces the tunes presence.  Nothing but murking about with this one.  ‘Pentinent Man’ follows ‘Ain’t Changing’, and is a very spacious production.  Brings you back a few years, no doubt.  The alternating snares add a really sick effect, too.  The 3rd tune, ‘Hunter’, brings out more of a extraterrestrial vibe with it.  Swaying synths, pumping sub hits, and half-step stomps, another classic styled production!  Matrix finished his release off with the tune ‘Blissfully Unaware’.  This tune definitely sits apart from the rest of the EP.  A much more upbeat vibe with with higher levels of the frequency spectrum being utilized.  Honestly, in my opinion, this tune gives me the same vibes as Kryptic Minds remix of DJ Madd’s ‘Dub Marine’.  Big ups on this one!

Below you will find the preview of the Pentiment Man EP.  You can pick this up at any of the major sites like Juno, Beatport, and Itunes.  Check out the Inna Riddim store for purchase too!    He also built a promo mix for this release, composed primarily of his own productions.  The mix is available for download off of the Inna Riddim website so if you’re vibin’, then snag it on up!  You can find the mix’s tracklist/download link below.  If you want to check out press release put out by the label, check it here.

F*CK YEAH! For Fridays

The weekend is finally here.  Time to bust out Grandpas cough syrup and get stepping!  Today’s music is a very eclectic mix.  The first track, hailing from one of the best producers of the past 2011 year, Kahn, is a remix of an extremely HARD track by Killa P & Badness.  Kahn puts his touch on it and turns into an absolute gangster anthem.  A bit different from Kahn’s typical purpley dance vibes, but it still captures the production talents that this guy has, no doubt.  Tunnidge holds the torch for this next tune.  A foundation-style approach on this one gives it longevity and class.  Somewhere amidst his time spent rendering artistic portrayals of those fortunate enough to get a release on Deep Medi, this long time contender has created another musical gem.  He’s about to embark on a tour over here on the west coast so make sure to check out the tour dates on his Facebook page so you can catch one of his shows!  He is stopping in San Francisco, so all the heads up north, DON”T MISS OUT!  Commodo put out another forthcoming tune just recently, and as you would expect, it’s a BANGER.  Commodo was the first artist we ever highlighted here at BWS, back when he was first signed on as a member of the Deep Medi family.  It’s been sometime since we’ve gotten wind of a tune that will see a release but, after hearing this tune it was definitely worth the wait.  The shuffle-ly drum sequence sets up nice for the rest of the tune.  The synth leads about halfway in are really sick, so hold tight.  Today, we thought there could be no better song to ease you into the weekend than one of Authors latest productions.  These two just cannot stop putting out top-notch music.  Some of the most soulful vibes accompanied by the cleanest mixdowns.  It’s really exciting when you imagine what these guys will be coming up with over the next year, because they are undoubtedly some of the most talented musicians on an individual level, and once they come together,  it’s like they’re the only ones with a gun at the knife fight.  Massive respect to Author, and if you somehow see this, COME TO THE STATES PLEASE!!!!!

Killa P & Badness – Nuh Failer (Kahn Remix)

Tunnidge – Twenty12

Commodo – Jaded

Author – You Made Mistakes Too

That about wraps it up today.  Have a sick weekend and don’t be a gangster, dance like one!

Kromestar, Guido, Compa and more.

Today we’ve got a nice lineup of tunes, some released very recently and others seeing releases this week!  The first few are ones we’ve never highlighted before and the last couple we’ll mention again just because they’re that good and we don’t want any of you forgetting to show your support to the artists when their releases drop.

First up we got a choon from the big dog Kromestar, an artist who’s been influencing bass music for quite some time now.  With his album Colourful Vibrations gaining major attention earlier in 2011 after being released on Dubstar records, Kromestar has proven his diversity time and time again.  From Badman VIP an absolute floor wrecker, to Disagree a soulful trumpet man ting, Kromestar’s covered everything in between and showed consistent quality throughout.  This week sees the release of two tunes out on Dubstep For Deep Heads label entitled Bookey and Alone.  Bookey is a wicked riddim incorporating video game like sounds with distorted basslines perfectly executed to make you stomp about.  Alone is a more chilled back tune compared to Bookey, utilizing a marching band drum pattern and steady low end, this a tune for after work spliff time.  Check both the tunes here and grab the record on promo!

Kromestar – Bookey/Alone

Following that big release, Guido very recently put out the first release for label State of Joy.  A bit different than what we’d usually cover but nonetheless, a super cool release.  The first tune on the release, Micro X is the one that first caught our attention with that spot on Guido melody accented with the synth that Guido, Joker and other Brtistol based posse are known for.  Here’s a cut of the tune, taken from a mix he did back March.

On the flip is a tune titled Vessel Dogs.  Starting out with a large kick drum and mesmerizing string riff the tune fills in with soft snares and fluctuating purple sounding synths.  This one is sick.  You can see Guido’s musical talent imprinted throughout layers of piano, strings, and a well-positioned bassline. Make sure to listen all the way through as the tune is packed with variations.

\\\Big Reminderz////

This week sees the official release of Goth-Trad’s New Epoch EP.  If you haven’t heard New Epoch, do so, it’s just a teaser of what’s to be found within this album.  Also, Compa who hooked us up with that wicked mix back in November is dropping ‘Sentence/Beginning’ on Boka Records as BOKA038PT2.  Be sure to get a copy of that as well.  This is soundsystem music so be sure to crank up those subs.  Oh and almost forgot to mention, the massive ‘Lightning/Overflow’ release by Antiserum and Ill-Esha dropped yesterday, so go bag it!

Here’s links to all these releases:

Goth Trad – New Epoch EP

Compa – Sentence/Beginning

Antiserum & Ill-Esha – Lightning/Overflow

Find tunes you like and share them with others and big up the artists.  That’s what it’s all about.

Share the love.

For The Ears Of The Inhabitants

.

Man, what the f*ck. The weekends go by way too fast! Someone needs to institute some sort of last Friday of every month off type ting’, there is just not enough time to unwind with only two days. We spend too much time worrying about the next bill due or the numbers on the clock. It’s things like these that many psychologists believe to be the underlying cause of the violence and contempt that humans exhibit. We are not innately evil, nor violent, we as humans strive for cooperation, collectivism, and functionality. All the worlds evils; self-righteousness, greed, angst, social inequity, etc., are products of an absence of love. The human spirit has been starved of its capabilities. It is a shame we have lost so much of the imagination and mysticism that once flooded the human psyche. Great minds are often wasted because an individual has never been given the chance to recognize his/her potential. My all-time favorite author, William Blake, once wrote that ” He whos face gives no light, shall never become a star. Eternity is in love with the productions of time.” (Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Proverbs of Hell) These words are so profound and each can gather their own sentiment from them.

Anyways, thank the heavens that we have music to uplift our souls! We are back with another week filled with quality music for all the readers ears’, so we hope you enjoy them.

This first tune hails from the production arsenals of PinchandPhotek. Pinch, who was responsible for founding Subloaded, one of the UK’s first pure dubstep nights, has recently been spending most of his time in the 120-135 area. Always one of the largest advocates of forward-thinking, he has been marrying a vast amount of styles within his sets. Listening to his mixing you will hear anything and everything from straight techno to chest-hollowing bass anthems. This recent collaboration with Photek, like his mixing, blends a pool of styles together to form a tune that appeals to listeners from all ends of the electronic music spectrum. Punchy synths, syncopated vocals, and huge sub-frequencies. Lend an ear!

Pinch & Photek – Acid Reign (Pinch’s dubplate version)

.

The second one we have is from Wheel & Deals latest hype,Surge . Last week we brought a tune that he did with N-Type, and it was nothing short of FIRE! Today, we have a solo release from the man like ‘Surge’ featuring the tracks ‘Leech’ and ‘Swaying Mantis’. This one just hit the stores today so make sure to grab your copy before it’s gone. Featuring the vocals of an artist unknown to us here at BWS, Leech is an anthem of perseverance. Merging deep, dark, and heavy with beautiful, free, and passionate, this one is pure vibes. The flip is straight-up BASSWEIGHT. One for all the deep-steppers that will mash up the dance! If you want to learn more about Surge, check out this piece that Knowledge Magazine did on him here.

Surge – Leech ft. Pyxis

Surge – Swaying Mantis

.

Last one is from one of the sickest duo’s out there right now. The Soap Dodgers have been releasing HUGE tunes like no other. Both tunes on this release are some of the most anthemic rave tunes we’ve heard to this day. Absolutely massive synths are met with even more massive bass notes. This is another release from the Wheel & Deal label, these guys are on top of things lately! Due out some time in February of this year, this release is an absolute must have.

Soap Dodgers – Rachel Went South

Soap Dodgers – Belly

That’s it for today. Bless up. Be free. Expose your mind.

Top 20 Releases of 2011: #20 – #11

Well everyone, we have reached that time of year. A time when you look back at all the things that you have accomplished, and of course the things you have yet to. It’s a time when we begin to make goals for next year, however ridiculous they may be. It’s a time for family, friends, loved ones, and blah, blah, and blah. It has always been of interest how we, as humans, thrive on some sort of calendrical affirmation to our existence. It is both a very scary, and settling concept. Scary because each year that passes we are closer to the end of our existence. But is this not the same reason that the concept is settling? This constant reminder of our mortal existence, does it not attribute meaning to everything that we do? It is the recognition of this finite boundary that motivates our species to achieve. Without time effecting the biological/physiological expiration dates of our bodies, what would be the reason in finishing anything?

Today is part 1 of a 2 part series that will be highlighting Bassweight Society’s choices for the top 20 releases of 2011. We say releases, so our choices will range from a single song to a full-length album. It seems silly having to say this but, just for the record, we are covering releases within the 140 Dubstep arena. This was of one of the most painstaking things we have had to do for the website thus far. It took so long to gather all the great releases of this year. But, that was a cakewalk compared to the difficulty in narrowing a list of almost 100 tunes into a list of 20, and then ranking those 20. We understand that some of you will not agree with our choices but it’s our website so, start your own if it bothers you that much. We tried to encompass a lot of different styles within Dubstep, so hopefully that is seen by those reading this. So, without further ado, let’s get this thing started.

20. Sukh Knight, Mensah, Squarewave – G Activity (Hench Recordings)

  • One of the greatest party tunes this year has seen. Eastern vibes layered up with one of the most anthemic drops. Each producer on this track, on an individual level, smashes it. So, nothing less than great should be expected when all three collaborate on the same tune. Download here.

19. V.I.V.E.K. – Eyes Down EP (Deep Medi Musik)

  • Perfectly suiting the Deep Medi imprint, this 4 track EP takes the listener on a journey through human emotion. The sampling used in this album is of the highest caliber. His sounds have been described as “conciousness moving”, and this album is just that. Be on the look for this man in 2012. Download here.

18. Matt U – Straightened Up (Subway Music)

  • 1 of 3 tracks released on the Straightened Up EP. This tune is just an absolute slumper. Matt-U has been releasing some really big tunes for the past few years and this is just another one for him to add under his belt. Top notch production. Download here.

17. Distance – Meanstreak EP (Chestplate Records)

  • Founder of Chestplate Records, Distance, is out with another set of the heaviest and most evil sounds in the genre. This package is filled with 4 tracks produced with some extremely unique and technical sounds. Download here.

16. Truth & Decoda – The Emperor (Wheel & Deal Records)

  • As if the New Zealand duo hadn’t made enough noise since 2009, they had to top off their year with this absolute gem. We feel that this tune is a perfect example of how you make an aggressive party tune without going over the top. Download here.

15. Matty G – Back To The Bay EP (Dub Police Records)

  • It is a proud moment for us to place this release on our top 20. California native Matty G released one of the most unique and West Coast-vibed Dubstep albums ever this year. Each track has a different feel. Each track is produced amazingly. The samples and influences that Matty brings into his sounds truly make an imprint on the UK dominated genre. Download here.

14. Pinch – Swish (Deep Medi Musik)

  • The almighty Pinch, who never ceases to amaze, dropped this ultimate sub-flexer mid-year. The tune is a fine display of innovation applied to classical Dubstep ideals. Download here.

.

13. L Wiz – Fotbojan (Hench Recordings)

  • One of the finest producers of the “purple” sound, L-Wiz releases amazing tunes each year. This track is an absolute feel-good vibe. One you grab the person you love to and skank out. One that you hear as the night is about to end and you look at your friends around you and say to yourself, “fuck, life is so good!”. Massive out to L-Wiz for this one. Download here.

12. LX One – You/Give It Up ( Wheel & Deal Records)

  • Both of these tunes are for the deep heads. Spot-on production skills. The bouncy vibe of ‘Give It Up’ is too good. The track ‘You’ is one that emits a tremendous amount of low-end pressure. This is how an MC shows you a thing or two about production. Download here.

11. DJ MADD – Arpz 3000 (Subway Music)

  • DJ MADD is a producer who has been making huge tune after huge tune in the shadows. A lot of people don’t know that this man is one of the hardest working and talented artists out there. Each year he releases a large number of tunes on various labels. This year he blessed us with many more. ‘Arpz 3000’ is a tune that anybody can get down to. Download here.

BOOM! There you have it. Bassweight Society’s first half of the top 20 releases of the year. Some absolute gems in here folks. If you haven’t already purchased these tunes/EP’s/Albums, please show these artists some support and do so!

Make sure you stay connected with BWS. Next Friday we will posting choices 1-10! Hope everyone has a great weekend and a fantastic Christmas, if you celebrate it that is.

To the Gods.
