Sparxy – Gravitation EP [PORK009]

Today I want showcase the ninth release on quickly rising label Bacon Dubs.  Since early 2011 the imprint has been releasing music from some of the scenes most deadly newcomers like DubApes, Reamz, and label boss Sparxy.  Here at Bassweight Society we’ve covered more than a few of the tracks put out on Bacon Dubs simply because the production quality is top-notch and many of the beats are of the few that find a common ground between foundation style bassweight and the aggressive nature of mid-range basslines.  PORK009 is another EP from the hands of Sparxy with collaborations from Fused Forces and Mannix.  There’s also a remix of Sparxy’s 006 release ‘Mr. Robot’ from newcomer Area Zero.  The beats from this release have been receiving support across the board from some of the most influential DJ’s in the underground – Skream & Benga, N-Type, Truth, Soap Dodgers, and J:Kenzo to name a few.  It’s honestly no surprise that this release is receiving such a high amount of praise because each of the tracks are absolute rinsers, each having a very unique structure and sound – ranging from 4×4 to groove swung half-step.

Gravitation ||

As the releases title track it opens up the mood quite nicely with its swinging grooves and droid-like mids.  Placing very minor percussive elements intricately throughout the mix really fills out the ethos of the track.  This is a perfect beat to grab the crowds attention and let them know you’re not here to mess about.

The Guardian ft. Mannix ||

This beat fit is nothing short of a 4×4 techno stomper!  the clean sub hits, pounding tribal kick patterns, and overall energy of create a serious rave vibe.  The tone of the vocal sample used perfectly round off the beat by complimenting its sinister presence.  The reverb-drenched, but still dry, hit of the snare add a great high frequency element to keep the mix fresh throughout.

Leviathan ft. Fused Forces ||

This collaboration with Fused Forces is without a doubt one of the largest tunes I have heard thus far in 2012.  The track title couldn’t be better suited for the monstrous presence of gritty reeses and sci-fi score eeriness heard in distant chimes lurking beneath the mix.  And f*cking hell – that kick drum!  Seriously, the variety of modulations applied to the basslines in this beat are beyond me.  This is one of those that can honestly send blood rushing through your veins in the same fashion our sympathetic nervous system would after seeing a Bengal Tiger turn the corner on us.  Flat-out mental.

Mission EP – Section 8 – [Sub Pressure Recordings]

It’s always nice getting a fresh EP from a local label. Even nicer when the EP is jam-packed with upbeat rhythms, guaranteed to add pace and flavor to any set.  Out today, Section 8’s, Mission EP from San Diego’s Sub Pressure recordings, gives listeners a unique combination of originals and remixes with a nueral-tribal sound that showcases upbeat percussions and tearing synth lines.  Take the time and listen to this fresh release with us.

The first two tracks of the EP are Section 8 originals, both of the XL size, and an interesting and fast-paced take on your normal 140 riddims.  The title track ‘Mission’ is almost two entirely different tracks. The first half of the tune goes right in with a kick-driven sub-roller with complex percussive rhythms.  The fun really begins at 3:12 when we hear a breakdown and the start of a “new” tune.  Carrying many elements from the first bit, the second drop rolls through, but this time with a mind-tearing midrange synth, which, I imagine, sounds massive on a soundsystem, as well as my actual studio monitors.

Track two, ‘Cylinder’, is a groovy number with a clean and techy midrange riding the drums for ultimate funk. Its eerie background ambiance adds space and tension before the second drop, which is proven just as reliable as the first for adding a clean and funky flavor to your set.

On remix duties we have, Mouch and Killeralien, each artist taking a different approach to transforming, while respecting Section 8’s unique sound. Mouch’s remix of ‘Boulevard’, is a definite bag.  Swinging drums, interesting vocal chops and an even more intriguing use of bass, make this tune a killer remix and a standalone testament to Mouch’s ability.  Killeralien’s take of ‘Mercury’ stays with the “nueral-tribal” vibe mentioned earlier and features driving percussions and gritty cerebral bass.  This track fits perfectly in the EP, with a mind-blowing second drop featuring dosed-up synths and high energy percussion.  Give both these remixes a listen, as they truly do compliment Section 8 and the EP as a whole.

Fresh Cuts: Proxima, PanLeft and Epoxy

What’s good fellow bassweight champions? Welcome back this fine Thursday morn. Today we’ve got a couple brand new bangers we’d like to feature from some up-and-comers surely to watch. Don’t sleep on these guys, read on and check out the treats from Proxima, PanLeft and Epoxy.

Gonna start this one out heavy with the insta-nod jam, ‘Formal Junction’ by Proxima. Released on Tempa in late March this tune is honestly a mind melter. For those who don’t know, Proxima is Icicle’s cousin, and well let’s just say, it runs in the family. With a slammin’ debut release on Tempa of all labels,  Proxima is someone to surely keep on your radar. Don’t forget the flipside either. ‘Grunge’ delivers some hop and bounce while still maintaining the bassweight depth we’ve grown to love . Check out both tracks below, and purchase them here.

Right, so next up is a club-promoter turned sound designer, PanLeft. His debut release via Blah Blah Blah Records has been in the works for a bit now, but just got unleashed on the public last week. The track that caught our attention, ‘Electrika’, is simply great. It’s epic buildup, snaps back right before the moment of truth and makes for an epic drop. Shying away from the traditional dungeon sounds, PanLeft takes deep in a different direction. The flip, ‘HRTS’, literally will HURT your chestplate, so be careful. Beatport.

Last up are some straight-forward bassweight slumpers from newbie, Epoxy. Rather than spray you with adjectives about this free release, I’ll let the tracks do the talking. Cut Classics: A Step Back

Welcome back from what was hopefully a dope weekend! Starting off this week proper we’re going to feature some vintage tunes that fit well in the mix. Released mostly on CD’s and vinyls, these tracks may be hard to acquire, but are absolutely worth the effort of tracking down. Reaching from 2007 to 2009, these classic tunes fit in well with any present day dubstep set and can really set the dancefloor on fire when used correctly. Featuring sounds from Tes la Rok, Benga, and DZ,  blow the dust off and check out these tunes.

First up is a tune that eerily foreshadowed the sounds that are present today, back in 2007. Featuring elements from all across the bass spectrum, DZ’s,  ‘Strong on Ya’ , surely is not a track to be lost in the archives. Sharp synths cut through the mix nicely, bumpy mid range add hop, and amen breaks meld it all together to create a jam that would hold its own in 2012. Pressed in 2007 on Hotflush Recordings, this release also features a massive flip side entitled ‘Slums Dub’.

Next up is an absolute party jam that can change the tone of any dance floor with the flick of the fader. This sing-a-long anthem made its rounds on the mix and live circuit back in 2007, and is bound to make a comeback. Tes la Rok’s remix of Uncle Sam’s ‘Round the World Girls’ released on Argon in ’07 will most likely be a hard find for the vinyl collector, but anyone can purchase both the remix and the VIP on Amazon (256kbps).

This next tune is an absolute pleasure to play out particularly because its sharp synth patterns that cut through and add to any mix. Fans and Dj’s alike can equally appreciate this futuristic-party track by the ever-diverse, Benga. Released in 2009 on N-Type and Hatcha’s Sin City Records, ‘On the Edge’ is featured on The Croydon Dubheadz Compilation vinyl as a well-deserved A-Side. Give it a listen and you will see why  its always a good thing to dig deep in the record bag and brush off a dusty one.

Rewind Wednesday – Origins of the Wob

Sup fam! You know the drill by now. Wednesday = legendary dubstep tunes. This week features a few tracks that will show the “Origins of the Wob” from it’s homely beginnings as a wump in the mix, to an all out dragon-beast destined to oscillate its way into the charts.

We all know that infamous wobble didn’t just fall out of thin air and land on Skream’s hard drive. The ‘Wobble’, or Low Frequency Oscillation (LFO) was a concentrated effort understood and utilized by early dubstep producers. Guy’s like The Others, Skream and Coki were boosting the Mid’s and cranking that LFO to great success with record sales and more importantly, dancefloor results. Take a journey with the Wob and see what you like better, the old or the new.

First up is Skream & Cluekid’s – ‘Sandsnake’. The first release on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz label, Sandsnake couples the amen-style breaks of Drum and Bass and an ever-present wobble to create an absolute dance floor killer. Released in August 07 – this tune turned many heads and opened many doors for the sound known as “dubstep”.

PS – Both Skream and Cluekid have been putting out much BWS approved material in 2011. Make sure to check them both out in 2012.

Hopping right into the second tune, Stenchman unleashes ‘What the Future Holds’ and the almost formulaic ‘epic drop’ that is so often reproduced nowadays. The wobs are complementary to the gritty saw that adds a groundbreaking element to a tune that could have easily inspired the word “Bassface”.

XSDubz – 2007

We’re ending it huge with our last track. Coki‘s – Spongebob, will honestly change the way you think about dubstep. It was released in ’07 under the uber-chill DMZ banner, yet it is one of the craziest-wobbliest tunes out there. We might ask “How did it make the cut?”. Well, it was one of the first of it’s kind, and promptly received a rewind 98% of the time it was dropped. This tune broke the ice with wobbles and absolutely dove in!

Cool, well we hope you enjoyed the tunes and noticed their similarities and the influence they hold today. These classics helped blaze the trail for the wobble and still stand up to big tunes today. Bump em!
