Drummed Out: Quantum Soul, Biome, Benton, & TMSV

Gwwwwaaaarnnn get up now!  What’s good folks…Hope everybody is doing well on this glorious day!  We gotta’ bunch of freshies for your ears today, encompassing a vast spectrum of style.  Hope you enjoy 🙂

I wanted to start things off with a proper dub-styled jam from the one and only TMSV.  This guy makes some of the cleanest sub-bass in the game.  The tune, ‘Attention’, comes in nice and sends some extremely positive vibrations through your mind and soul.  Endless delays, climbing basslines, dubbed out vocals, the whole-nine yards with this one.  I would really like to see this get a release!  On a side note, I am really feeling these dub-wise tunes that TMSV has been writing on the late.  Stoked to hear more of it!

TMSV – Attention

.

This next bit is moving back towards the darker side of the spectrum.  Biome has seriously been on such a massive run lately with amount of top-notch tunes he has been putting out.  ‘Persepolis’ on Macabre Unit Vinyl, ‘The Raven’/’Hybrid’ Remix on Osiris, and his 3 track release on the Deep Heads label.  Like I said, serious business this guy.  This track was put up on the Deep Heads soundcloud page earlier today and is another percussion flooded roller from the badman.  Subs up, eyes down for this one.

Biome – The Road

.

Moving straight into the depths of the spectrum now with this preview of Benton’s ‘Defect Mind’, forthcoming on his Wheel & Deal album ‘Reflections’.  Benton is a producer who has a sound distinct to only himself, in my opinion.  The dark and sinister vocal clips, the slumping bass lines, and fine-tuned atmospherics are always present inna’ production with this guy.  Put your ouija board away before you press play on this one ;).

Benton – Defect Mind (Forthcoming Wheel & Deal)

.

I wanted save this next tune for last because I believe it will send everybody off with a BANG!  Coming from the hands of our friend Quantum Soul is a remix done for SideProjekt’s tune ‘Temple’.  An absolute sub workout, this one!  Such an immense variety of sounds intricately placed together to create the massive amount of energy that this tune puts out.  Some SEEEERRIOUS soundsystem music!  Clear some space for the skankin’ that will undoubtedly occur once you press play.

.

BLESS!  Hope you are all diggin’ the tunes for today.  Support the artists by buying their music and seeing them spin when they come to your town!  It’s a rough lifestyle for most of our favorite artists (obviously not the large names) so don’t make it any rougher on them by jacking the product of their countless hours in the studio.  Fo’ real do’.  We’ll catch you next time.

To the gods.

Exclusive Interview: TMSV

Blessings, friends.  Welcome back.  We have a truly amazing feature today with, in my opinion, one of the greatest producers in the circuit right now.  Tomas Roels, aka TMSV, has been kind enough to give us a few words about his influences, his plans for 2012, and some thoughts on the US dubstep scene.  It is really an honor to have the opportunity to work with this guy as I’ve been a huge fan ever since I first heard his sounds on Box Clever in 2010.  Being creative as a youth with things such as painting and drawing acted as a catalyst into Roels’ adoption of music production.  The idea of “creating something out of nothing”, as he put it in his interview with FatKidOnFire/MakeItGood back in August of 2011 (Check it here). It wasn’t until he was around the age of 15 that he began the journey of forming his own ‘sound’.  While things didn’t necessarily take off in the beginning, as soon as he was introduced to jungle and drum and bass, things began to come together.  After gaining the satisfaction of creating his own music, “something from nothing”, his passion and dedication exploded.  After becoming bored with producing “hard and repetitive” dnb, he was introduced to dubstep by his cousin.  He was hooked on the space and endless amount of possibilities that the space provided for his compositional creativity.  The rest is history.

Fast-forward to 2012 and TMSV is receiving support from Mala, Youngsta, DJ Thinking, DJ Madd, J:Kenzo, and the list could go on for days.  It’s no surprise that this is the case with the sound versatility that he brings to the table.  There are purely meditative tracks like ‘Myth’, hard-hitting rollers like his recent collaboration ‘Difference’, and dub influenced jams such as his latest remix of “Lay Down My Burden’ which is set to release sometime soon on the label Foundation Sound.  Whatever the style is, he seems to be able to hit the nail on the head.  Since 2010 he has earned himself a number of top-notch releases on labels like Tube10, although the majority of his signings are by Black Box/Box Clever.  Releasing music almost exclusively with Black Box/Box Clever, label owner Thinking has got to be a pretty happy man!  2012 proves to be a very successful year for Tomas as he gives us news of many upcoming collaborations and new sounds to be conquered, so be sure that you keep your ears on this guy!  So, without any further introduction, let’s see what this true badman has to say:

—————————-

BWS: Quickly, can you give the readers a little back round information about yourself?

TMSV: My name is Tomas, 23 years old and I’m from the Netherlands. I’ve been making electronic music for a couple of years, mainly dubstep.

BWS: Where did the moniker TMSV originate?

TMSV: When I first started making music I was really into jungle. One night a friend and I were joking around and he called me Tomassive (or at least that’s what I remember), so I just started to use that as a production alias. After a while I thought it was a bit gimmicky, so I changed it to TMSV. I guess it doesn’t mean anything anymore, but I urge people to have fun imagining what the letters could possibly stand for.

BWS: In your interview with Kmag last year, you stated that you think very highly of Mala because of his carelessness towards the expectations of others and money.  It’s really great to hear things like that.  What do you take away from your own music?  By that I mean what sorts of fulfillment do you get from it, psychologically or spiritually?

TMSV: Well, I’m not a spiritual person, but I guess I am emotional. I tend to use music as an outlet. I always feel the need to make music to express myself in a way. I’m not sure if the tunes themselves describe my emotions directly, but the way I feel definitely determines the way my tunes sound.

What I take away from my own music is more of a psychological fulfillment, as you put it. The fact that I can make the music I want to make, and the fact that people really seem to like it, is fantastic.

It’s been a bit tricky for a while. The more people liked and played my tunes, the more I felt pressured to make tunes that sound a certain way. I’ve made some pretty generic tunes recently (that probably nobody has heard), but I’ve realised that I should just keep making my music. It’s supposed to be fun.

.

BWS: Sadly, I have never had to chance to visit the Netherlands.  The pictures I’ve seen of the geography are really astounding, though.  The amount of green in the countryside is magical.  The architecture of the cities is something to marvel over as well.  How much inspiration, if any, do you gather from your surroundings?

TMSV: I really like this country. There aren’t many exotic or amazing things to see nature-wise, but it’s never ugly. I like the cities as well, old Dutch architecture can be really beautiful, and luckily there are lots of old buildings that are still standing.

I guess I gather inspiration from the relative serenity of the area where I live. One of the best things about this place is that you can almost always escape from the chaos of modern city life. I live in a quiet neighborhood as well, and it’s a 15 minutes’ walk to the centre of the city, so if I want to see friends and have a drink, I can choose to leave my quiet house and go to the slightly more busy city. I think the fact that going out doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re jumping into a city full of chaos and noise is calming in a way.

BWS: Furthering on influences and inspiration, how did the track ‘Myth’ come about?  Hands down one of the best tunes that was released last year.  I listen to the tune almost everyday when I get off work and every time it sounds fresh.  Seriously, big up for that production.

TMSV: Thank you very much! It’s actually very reliant on samples, as you can hear from the lead sound. After using the sample(s) I made a bassline and a beat, added some atmospheres and other sounds, and that’s all there was to it, really. I have to say that the tune was already at least 2 years old when it was released, so I can’t really remember too much about how I made it.

.

BWS: Do you see yourself going in any specific direction with your productions in 2012?

TMSV: Definitely. As I said, I’m focusing on making music right now. I’m trying to avoid being boring and predictable, to a certain extent of course. At the moment I’m making more than just 140 BPM music: I’m working on dub, house, garage, hip-hop, downtempo, all kinds of stuff.

BWS: What are your feelings on the 140 jungle tunes that have been getting hype lately?

TMSV: There’s definitely some great 140 jungle around at the moment, in fact I just got some today that sounded sick.

It seems to be difficult (for me as well as for other producers) to really ‘get it right’ and not sounding like a parody of the typical jungle sound. Jungle was never about quantising and getting your samples to sound just right; it was about the groove of the breaks you used, the simple but effective basslines and the vibes of the blatantly sampled sounds that were scattered around the tune. Modern music production software makes it much easier to make a really well-produced tune than the old samplers the jungle guys used to have, and I think nowadays you actually have to put effort into balancing a nice mixdown with getting an ‘authentic’ sound.

BWS: You have been collaborating with some really sick artists recently, like DJ Madd and June Miller.  Can we expect a lot more collaborations to come?

TMSV: Yes, definitely. I’m working with loads of people right now, but I’m not going to tell you who they are, because you never know if a collab is going to work or not.

I’m also looking for vocalists to work with me. I’ve had some responses already, but I’m always open to singers and MCs who would like to work with me. Please don’t hesitate to send me a message through Soundcloud or Facebook.

.

BWS: What are your views on the US dubstep scene, as a whole?  Do you see yourself making it out this way anytime soon?

TMSV: Hopefully, yes. I’ve only been to the US once, about 9 years ago. I’d really love to visit again at some point. You can count on me flooding Facebook with spam when someone books me to come play in the US.

I don’t know much about your dubstep scene, but I do know that the deeper sound has gained popularity recently, which is great. It’s a huge country and very musically diverse, so I can’t see why the dubstep scene couldn’t be great.

BWS: If you could collaborate with any US based producer, who would it be, and why?

TMSV: When it comes to dubstep (and related genres), DJG (Grenier) or Matty G. Their tunes are very musical and diverse and the production is always sick, so collaborating with either of them would be cool. I’m probably missing ten thousand other American producers in my head right now. Sorry, you know how it is.

There are so many US based producers of other styles, it would be impossible to choose one or even ten. I do think I should name Dr. Dre and RZA just in case they Google themselves while looking for Dutch producers to work with.

Serious amount of respect out to TMSV for doing this feature for us, it was truly an honor.  All the heads reading this that are new to his sounds, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do!  Be sure to stop by his Soundcloud and Facebook page and show him some love and support if you’re feeling his vibes.  You can find links to both below.

Alright people, that’s it for today.  Now I’m off to Coachella with the homie Lowkey to check out some very diverse musicians/bands out in Indio, CA.  Really stoked to see Machinedrum and Sbtrkt, among many many others.  Pretty stoked to see Sub Focus’s new “live” set as well.  Anyways, hope everybody has a great weekend filled with good vibes, good people, and good music.  One love.

To the gods.

It’s Monday. F*@K.

Gwaann get up to da’ decks man.  Another Monday here to taunt us all with the 5 days we must wait until we are once again freed from our chains.  It really sucks how fast the weekends go by.  Straight up madness.  To say the least, I was extremely exhausted to begin with today, and then got flooded with a full day of work then a paper that I had to jam out before class.  Just got back to the crib and I am most definitely lacking the appetite for literary expression that I usually have.  Just one of those days, haha.  But, fear not, I have still gathered up a handful of good tunes that I have come across in the little free time I’ve had the past couple days.  A lot of mellow vibes featured in today’s post so, make sure you have a spliff ting’ ready for the lighta’.

First track on the decks is one from Macabre Unit crew member, Congi.  This track keeps it really smooth, minimal, and lounge-like vibed.  Nothing like a coffee and some creeping sunlight to this one.

Gantz – Indifferent (Congi Remix)

.

Next track is another from TMSV.  This one’s another easy-vibed roller.  Actually progresses quite nicely from the previous track.  Not a lot needs to be said when a track comes out the hands of this guy except, LISTEN CLOSELY.  A true don to the game.

TMSV – Stress

.

The next 3 tracks come from US based producer, VVV.  He makes truly beautiful music.  Each of the tracks listed below fit in perfectly with tunes such as the above.  The realness to his productions is unique and can’t really be matched by anybody.  I mean, his songs really take your mind away and let you drift for a few minutes at a time.  Vibbbbbbbbbeess.

VVV – Leave (Clip)

.

VVV – Interested In You

.

Delete – Neva (VVV Remix)

.

All right, I know there is definitely some heads that want some heavy weight business so I got two for ya’ll.  First track is a remix that Chestplate boss Distance has recently put out.  Put out his interpretation of  Overjoyed, by Bastille, in a very nice fashion.  Got some eerie ting’s coming out the speakers with this track.  Vocal processing is top-notch and track is mixed-down flawlessly.  The to set things off rolling into Tuesday we have a new one put out by heavyweight bossman, Sleeper.  Forthcoming Chestplate records.  HUGE tune.

.

Sleeper – Zodiac

.

Hope these tunes ease the transition back to reality, even if they are kinda late.  Bless to the readers.

To the gods.

On The Flex: Biome, Mala, & TMSV

Massive out to all the heads that have been supporting us recently!  This grassroots movement has slowly, but very surely, been growing within the past couple months and the traffic through the website has increased significantly.  It really means a lot to us here at BWS.  We’ve always had a lot of faith in this music/culture because it is one filled with longevity and passion, and all of you readers have affirmed that faith.  As stated at the beginning of the new year, we have plans for 2012 to be a really big year for us and we couldn’t be happier the share the experiences with all of you.  RESPECT!

Now, with all the sentimental sh*t out of the way, let’s get right into today’s music.  Not only has 2012 been a great year for us, it has been a great year for the entirety of the dubstep scene.  No, we are not talking about the Grammy’s given to, thou who shall’nt be named.  We are talking about the foundation scene.  The deep scene has witnessed such a prolific amount of innovation and evolution to dubstep.  From tribal to techno, jungle to classical, the influences are FLOODING the productions.  Today we have a pretty random collection of tunes to showcase, all of them top-notch.

The first batch of tunes come the man known as Biome.  He should be no secret to any of you, and if he is, GET AMONGST IT!  Pushing out high quality releases since 2008 from labels such as Subsonik, Biscuit Factory, Sub Pressure, Osiris, and most recently Black Box, he’s a man who has nothing but WEIGHT up his sleeves.  His most recent release on Black Box, titled ‘Space’, is truly an unreal production.  Seems only suiting that it earned a release as a single-sided vinyl in the XXX series from the box.  Today he announced a release on the imprint M.U.V (Macabre Unit Vinyl).  A tune called ‘Persepolis’.  An absolutely massive production!  Take a listen to Persepolis and few other bits that he has just thrown up on his Soundcloud page.

.

Biome – Zen

.

Biome – Shadows

.

This next track is recent one from the almighty Mala.  Set to release on his album due out sometime this year.  Rumor has it that the entire album is influenced off his recent  travels in Cuba.  You can definitely feel the vibes in this track.  Titled ‘Cuba Electronica’, this tune is seriously MAD.  Listen to the man Joe Nice when he brings in the second drop, it’s straight up badness coming through your speakers.  This will no doubt, as always with Mala, be one of the most anticipated releases of the year so keep your eyes and ears open.

.

The last track we are going to leave you off with today comes from the extremely talented hands of TMSV.  This guy has seriously been handling business for the past couple years and 2012 is definitely going to be a HUGE year for the man.  Releases tunes pretty much exclusively on Box Clever/Black Box records, DJ Thinking must be amped on life.  TMSV’s production abilities are hard to pigeonhole so I’m not even going to try.  He can really build music in an amazing fashion,  and I will leave it at that.  This tune, a remix of Dark Angel’s ‘Lay Down My Burdens’, is going to send you all off with a righteous vibe.  It’s forthcoming on Foundation Sound, date still to come.  Let the music speak to you.

Dark Angel – Lay Down My Burdens

.

Also, in case you missed this free download he gave out a few months ago, GRAB IT UP WHILE IT’S STILL THERE!  A really sick tune he did with Myrkur called ‘Icarus’. Of course, show the man some love!

TMSV & Myrkur – Icarus (FREE DOWNLOAD)

.

Alright fam, that’s all for today.  Stay blessed.

To the gods.

Heat, Heat, And More Heat.

Oi oi oi!  For those of you that tend to live with your heads in the sand, there has been some intense shit going down with the SOPA/PIPA protests in the past couple of days.  The site Megaupload has been shut down and owners are now being accused of soliciting $500 million dollars in lost revenue for copyright holders.  There are 7 people being charged in this case, 4 of which were arrested today in New Zealand.  The US extracted Dutch citizens from New Zealand for copyright laws, while 3 owners are still on the loose.  Yes, you read that right, the US extracted Dutch citizens from New Zealand for infringing on copyright laws.  Kinda scary to think what will be next.   Things are really starting to get out of hand, so if you haven’t signed the petition, called your local Senator, and done everything else that you can do, PLEASE DO IT!!  There is a ribbon on the top right of this page, you can click that and sign the petition/get further information.

Today we have a bunch of goodies for everyones ears.  We have a couple mixes, a couple fresh tunes, and some very crucial release information.

First piece that we want to look at is an amazing new tune from the badman duo, Kryptic Minds.  First heard this tune back on FACT Mix 241 that Kryptic Minds did, and now it’s finally going to see a release on Tectonic!  This tune is an absolute sub-heavy anthem.  These guys have been picking up an incredible amount on momentum the past couple of years and they continue to exhibit some of the most balanced/clean mixdowns while pumping out some of the most powerful sub-frequencies of any producer.  Enjoy heat #1.

Kryptic Minds – Talisman

.

Next sound we have for you is a mix built by TMSV.  This is 40 minutes of STRICTLY BUSINESS!  One of the better mixes we have heard lately, filled with such a large amount of top-notch productions.  Starting off real nice, the DJ Madd remix of Alone in the Darkness sets the tone heavy and deep.  He then progresses into a plethora of his personal productions, showing everybody why he in among the most high level of producers.  Setting the vibe real nice for everybody that’s getting to see him play at Dubtactics XL!  Slump to heat #2.  P.s. if you want to download the mix, grab it right here.

TMSV Dubtactics XL Promo Mix

.

The next tune has probably already been seen by everybody being blasted all over Rinse by Youngsta, but it’s just too good to not post up.  Another absolute production from the earthquake-wrestling boys from down under, Truth.  The track, titled ‘All Over’, is destined to wreck dance floors for the next few months, NO DOUBT!  The clip we have is one taken off of Youngsta’s show but be on the lookout for this one because it’s just plain old MASSIVE mates!

Truth – All Over

.

The last piece that we are going to leave you with today/tonight/whatever time it is you read this, is a live set that Author played at Exodus during a DMZ night.  The entire 44 minutes is pure bliss.  The musical ability that is alive when Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin get together is so inspiring, and their live sets are no different.  The day that these guys make it over to the US will be one of the happiest days for us here at BWS.  The emotion, soul, funk, and groove that go into their productions is unmatched and beyond unique.  The next couple years are going to hold some really amazing things for these guys, on an individual level as well as the entity, Author, that they comprise.  This is just PURE VIBES, straight feel-good music, life layed out in notes.  Take a trip.

Author Live At DMZ – Exodus

.

Alright people, enjoy!  Don’t forget to protect your individual freedoms and continue to protest the SOPA/PIPA acts that will be voted on January 24th, 2012!  Much love and respect from the crew!

To the gods.
