Dimensions Festival 2012: Sneak Peak

What up everybody!  Tuesday is back and today we want to take some time and have a quick look at the one of the most hyped  new musical experiences of 2012, Dimensions Festival.  This one and Outlook are THE two most highly desired events for us here at BWS.  But, today we’re going to talk about Dimensions since it’s the first one ever!  All elements considered, there seems to be no better place to experience the finest collection of bass music.  Anywhere.  Needless to say, we’re hoping that we will get our scrubby ass selves over there soon (crossing our fingers for this year!).  Taking place on an abandoned fort in Pula, Croatia from Thursday September 6th – Sunday September 9th of this year, there’s no doubt it’s going to be straight bonkers.  The lineup is jam-packed full of so many unbelievable artists like Mala, Author, Scuba, Floating Points, Joy O, Pinch, Machinedrum, Untold, and the list goes on for days.  If you haven’t heard of this event and you truly have a passion for quality bass, I would highly recommend manipulating your schedule in whatever way necessary to get yourself there.  It’s the brainchild of Outlook festival, obviously since it’s organized by the same group, so you know it’s going to be done in a proper fashion.  While Outlook is really the icing on the cake for bass enthusiasts, Dimension is looking to be a much more intimate festival (and a bit more affordable, too).

As we’re from the US, we don’t have chances like this to view the multitude of quality artists that Dimensions offers, in such a surreal setting.  This is the perfect vacation from candy-glow ravers, commercialized music, and shot-out venues.  It’s no secret that the festival/rave scene has grown exponentially in the US, so taking a break from all the hype and really getting to listen the the artists that we love, with people who are truly their for the music, is something that we deeply long for.  All the US heads, make sure you get out here if you can, make our presence known.  A lot of people have misconceptions about listeners from the states so I’m sure they would love to meet stateside cats that know a thing or two about music made for the chestplate.

I would love to show you all more pictures of the event, but this is the first year it has taken place so there aren’t any pictures!  And I lost John Connor’s number when I dropped my last phone in the toilet.  Before we send you off for the day we want to showcase some sounds of the artists that you will be seeing at the festival this year!  As I was saying earlier in the post, there is honestly too many good artists to name on this ticket, and the sounds that we’ve chosen today are simply at random because if we posted everything that we wanted to, we would likely overload the server.  But, take a peek at this promo video they made for the event.  Gets our blood going!

The first piece of music we have is one from the Dutch bred 2562.  This is a mix we pulled off the Dimensions Festival Soundcloud Page, so it’s like totally official.  Was a mix done for Ninja Tune online radio.  This 45 minute mix is a shining example of 2562’s technical mixing abilities and his unparalleled interpretation of techno/house music. Aka ‘A Made Up Sound’.

This next bit is a mini-mix from a guy who has been making the US proud.  Brooklyn based Machinedrum has been putting out some of the greatest dance jams of the year.  On the forward-thinking tip for sure!  This track teaser of his displays influences from all over the board; jungle, soul, hip-hop, trance, to name a few.  Definitely going to be one of the sicker sets at Dimensions.

This next mix is from the almighty Author.  We highlighted this mix a few months back, when it was put up but, it’s honestly one of the sickest mixes that I’ve ever heard and I think is a great example of what Author does.  This is 45 minutes of the most intense audible bliss you can experience.  Maybe that’s a bit of an overstatement, but maybe not.  Taken from DMZ/Exodus in Leeds.  You should really set aside 45 minutes and listen to this mix in its entirety.

Music For Your Mindstate: Techno To Tearout

Yup.  It’s Friday.  Such blessed days, Fridays are.  Just want to give a massive shout to all the heads that rolled through Bassweight Society presents Broken Note last night.  It was truly a great one.  I don’t think people were ready for the powerful sounds that Broken Note had up his sleeve.  Some of the most groundshaking, industrial-esque music I’ve heard, hands down.  He absolutely smashed the dance up!

Before you guys get your weekends started we have some killer tunes that have recently been put into circulation.

First two tracks are off of Boddika’s forthcoming Swamp 81 release that’s due out the 26th of March.  The A side, ‘Acid Jackson’, is MAADDDDD groovy!  Nothing less should ever be expected when Boddika gets on the buttons but, nevertheless, this tune is exceptionally large.  The flip, ‘Basement’, is another gem, straight up.  The synth moves your body for you, even if you’re too cool to skank.

Next tune is another techno one from Sleeper.  Himself, alongside Killawatt, are a techno binge lately and honestly I can’t complain.  Sleeper’s minimal techno vibes are epic!  I mean we’re talking underground dungeon rave status.  No windows, no light, nothing but lasers and vibes.  The track is called ‘Telepathy’, highly recommend listening to this one with your sound at high output levels.

Alright, now we’re moving back into the 140 arena with Mensah’s forthcoming Deep Medi release, ‘The Gambia/The Trailing Moons of Saturn’.  This one like Boddika’s is due out March 26 and will no doubt fly off the shelves so, I recommend watching your preferred vinyl retailer very closely so you don’t miss out.  The first track, ‘The Gambia’, is a dark, tribal infused tune for the deep heads.  The percussion is huge on this track!  The Trailing Moons of Saturn is a mind raper.  It gives me the same vibes as a lot of Goth-Trad’s recent work.  Perfectly suiting for the Deep Medi imprint in my opinion.  Take a peak below, blud.

The last track we’re going to leave you with is a recent collaboration between LAXX and Walsh, forthcoming on Wheel & Deal.  This one is a straight party tune.  These boys make their presence very well-known with this track as the gritty wobble comes through the speakers with ferocity and, most importantly, CONTROL.  Too much of the heavier stuff lately displays very poor production quality/sound design, but not with this track.  Quality in-your-face dubstep that will set the dance off without a doubt.  Respect to the boys!

Cato’s Funky Steppa EP, Camu, Stigma, & Gestalt

Eassssyyyyyyy people.  Hope this post is reaching you in good health and spirits!  I am absolutely exhausted from watching Breakage last night in Hollywood.   Up into the early hours of the morning.  Every time I see that man my level of respect jumps up immensely.  He is truly one of the sickest producers/DJ’s in the game.  His style of music is so unique, constantly coming at you with these huge 4×4 kick drums and some of the most ravey synths I have ever heard.  If any of you haven’t been lucky enough to see one his performances I HIGHLY recommend grabbing a ticket to his show next time he comes to your town.  He went into some jungle last night for about 15 minutes too and it was just straight vibes man.  It was really sick to see all these little kids who, for the most part, didn’t even know who he was just go nuts.  I mean honestly I don’t think you can resist brukking out to your fullest potential when he hops on the decks, his skills are unmatched.  Big up to the Bassrush crew for bringing him out to the Funktion Wednesday’s, BWS was there is full effect and had a blast.  Tonight, if you’re in the LA area I would highly recommend checking out Respect at the Dragonfly as Atlantic Connection will be headlining and that performance will most definitely be worth checking out!

Now, let’s get down to today’s music.  First up we have another release coming from the homies over at Inna Riddim.  The Funky Steppa EP, coming from new found talentCato, is filled with 4 tracks of varying stylistic approach, all real quality productions.  Personally, my favorite tune on this release is ‘Dizzy Cow’.  This tune comes with a mad funky drop that sets the dance up perfectly for footwork business!  Cato is definitely a guy to keep your eyes on because it’s very likely that he will be making big moves this year.  Very shortly after Inna Riddim snagged him up for this EP, N-Type took notice of Cato and signed the track ‘Who’s Cato’ to release on his 100% Pure Dubstep vol.2 compilation that was released March of last year.  The Funky Steppa EP will be available for download at all major digital outlets such as Juno, Beatport, and Itunes.  Take a listen below to preview and show Cato some love!

The next track that we have to showcase is one from Camu.  When I first came across this guy, I expressed that his music the definition of “meditating on bassweight’.  This track, called ‘Tajmi’, is no different.  He layers up the track with beautifully sequenced drums, eastern vibe vocal chants, and distant synths that add an ambiance to the track that is so deep.  This guy really needs to get more exposure.  I mean, it could be a longshot, but his vibes are so suited for the Deep Medi imprint, in my opinion.  Hopefully his sounds will blow up because the more effort that this fellow is able to put into his productions the more our ears will be blessed.  Lend an ear below to this gem.

The last track of the day is one coming from two up-and-coming producers that go by the names Stigma & Gestalt.  The tune, titled ‘Tribes’, is a really deep lurker!  Comes hard with a growling bassline that’s fitted to scare the children away, no doubt.  The vocals that come in at the beginning immediately hook you and transport your mind into a very renaissance-esque vibe that I envision myself marching to battle with.  Haha, man that probably sounds weird but, it’s the truth.  Once tune progresses into it’s climax, percussion floods the airwaves and the eyes down business begins.  Again, these are two producers that you should really keep your ears on because if they continue to produce tunes like this they are going to get noticed quicker than you can say “bassweight is king”.  Listen below and make sure to visit their Facebook pages and show them support.  There are some free 320’s on Stigma’s page for those who ‘like’ it, so get amongst it people!

On The Flex: Biome, Mala, & TMSV

Massive out to all the heads that have been supporting us recently!  This grassroots movement has slowly, but very surely, been growing within the past couple months and the traffic through the website has increased significantly.  It really means a lot to us here at BWS.  We’ve always had a lot of faith in this music/culture because it is one filled with longevity and passion, and all of you readers have affirmed that faith.  As stated at the beginning of the new year, we have plans for 2012 to be a really big year for us and we couldn’t be happier the share the experiences with all of you.  RESPECT!

Now, with all the sentimental sh*t out of the way, let’s get right into today’s music.  Not only has 2012 been a great year for us, it has been a great year for the entirety of the dubstep scene.  No, we are not talking about the Grammy’s given to, thou who shall’nt be named.  We are talking about the foundation scene.  The deep scene has witnessed such a prolific amount of innovation and evolution to dubstep.  From tribal to techno, jungle to classical, the influences are FLOODING the productions.  Today we have a pretty random collection of tunes to showcase, all of them top-notch.

The first batch of tunes come the man known as Biome.  He should be no secret to any of you, and if he is, GET AMONGST IT!  Pushing out high quality releases since 2008 from labels such as Subsonik, Biscuit Factory, Sub Pressure, Osiris, and most recently Black Box, he’s a man who has nothing but WEIGHT up his sleeves.  His most recent release on Black Box, titled ‘Space’, is truly an unreal production.  Seems only suiting that it earned a release as a single-sided vinyl in the XXX series from the box.  Today he announced a release on the imprint M.U.V (Macabre Unit Vinyl).  A tune called ‘Persepolis’.  An absolutely massive production!  Take a listen to Persepolis and few other bits that he has just thrown up on his Soundcloud page.

This next track is recent one from the almighty Mala.  Set to release on his album due out sometime this year.  Rumor has it that the entire album is influenced off his recent  travels in Cuba.  You can definitely feel the vibes in this track.  Titled ‘Cuba Electronica’, this tune is seriously MAD.  Listen to the man Joe Nice when he brings in the second drop, it’s straight up badness coming through your speakers.  This will no doubt, as always with Mala, be one of the most anticipated releases of the year so keep your eyes and ears open.

The last track we are going to leave you off with today comes from the extremely talented hands of TMSV.  This guy has seriously been handling business for the past couple years and 2012 is definitely going to be a HUGE year for the man.  Releases tunes pretty much exclusively on Box Clever/Black Box records, DJ Thinking must be amped on life.  TMSV’s production abilities are hard to pigeonhole so I’m not even going to try.  He can really build music in an amazing fashion,  and I will leave it at that.  This tune, a remix of Dark Angel’s ‘Lay Down My Burdens’, is going to send you all off with a righteous vibe.  It’s forthcoming on Foundation Sound, date still to come.  Let the music speak to you.

Deeper & Darker Directions

What up everybody.  This week has been kinda sparce so we apologize about that.  But today we have some truly dark tracks to highlight.  All of these tunes are strictly for sound systems.

As Skream so eloquently put it “if you have no sub theres no point listening”.  So, as given away with the quote, the first track we have for you today is from the Godfather himself.  This tune embodies the side of Skream that we just can’t get enough of!  Sidestepping the aggressive, tear-out styles, he delves extremely deep into frequencies that literally cannot be heard without proper sound.  I listened to it on my laptop just to see what it would sound like and wondered how people can judge this type of music without actually hearing it.  Nevertheless, the tune is a straight up lurker.  A track that pretty much says “eat shit all you haters, I’m still here”, to all the people criticizing his current ventures into mashing up dancefloors real heavy.

Then we have a couple clips from the newest addition to the Deep Medi imprint, Dark Tantrums.  Other than release from Kromestar that this guy was featured on and Mala dropping his tune in that XLR8R mix last year, this character has just been off the radar, at least to us.  The release, ‘Unborn’/’Storm’, will be Deep Medi’s 54th release and is perfectly suiting for the imprint.  Both of the tunes are for the chestplate.  Unfortunately these are just short clips but be on the look for the full version once the release drops!

The next track is another from our friend Compa.  He is being generous enough to give this tune out for FREE so make sure you grab your copy before the download option gets it’s card pulled.  It’s a remix that Compa did of a tune by Skin E called ‘Reveal’.  Another extremely heavy production from the hands of Compa.  If you didn’t catch the interview we did with him back in November, check it out here, there is also an exlcusive mix he built for us available for download on that post.  When we did the interview we said that he was gonna be rising quick in the game and sure enough, over the past few months Compa has secured/cleared the shelves of a release with Boka Records and also launched his ‘Dem A Talk’ remix on white label and that too flew off the shelves in a matter of hours.  A lot of good things to be coming from this guy so make sure to keep your eyes on him.

Then to ease things off we have a mix that Killawatt did for Outlook 2012, filled with 100% Killawatt productions.  One of the most innovative and amazing producers out there right now, hands down.  Fusing sounds together with an insurmountable amount of force.  Pushing boundaries, creating new levels, and holding the throne to some of the most amazing percussion in his music.  Massive up to Killawatt and his recent success.
