John Matrix: The Pentinent Man EP (INNA008)

What up people.  Eluded by the title, today, we have a look into Inna Riddim’s newest addition to the roster, John Matrix.  The Pentiment Man EP will hit the stores today, February 10, so make sure to snag your copy of it!  Hailing from Manchester, Matrix brings heavy interpretations of the dark, minimalist styles within dubstep.   Having a well-rooted involvement in the Manchester scene with things like his earlier days on Unity Radio and his current residency with the Deadbeats Collective, Matrix is a well-seasoned contender.  He has dabbled in producing a plethera of styles within the bass scene which has given him the ability to be very versatile with his incorporation of influences.  This EP is filled with rolling low-end frequencies, shattering snare hits, and killer soundscapes.  Setting the mark as Inna Riddims 8th release (INNA008), Matrix exhibits a very complimenting style to the labels vibe.  ‘Ain’t Changing’ starts things off.  Coming at you right from the beginning with an energetic vocal sample that prefaces the tunes presence.  Nothing but murking about with this one.  ‘Pentinent Man’ follows ‘Ain’t Changing’, and is a very spacious production.  Brings you back a few years, no doubt.  The alternating snares add a really sick effect, too.  The 3rd tune, ‘Hunter’, brings out more of a extraterrestrial vibe with it.  Swaying synths, pumping sub hits, and half-step stomps, another classic styled production!  Matrix finished his release off with the tune ‘Blissfully Unaware’.  This tune definitely sits apart from the rest of the EP.  A much more upbeat vibe with with higher levels of the frequency spectrum being utilized.  Honestly, in my opinion, this tune gives me the same vibes as Kryptic Minds remix of DJ Madd’s ‘Dub Marine’.  Big ups on this one!

Below you will find the preview of the Pentiment Man EP.  You can pick this up at any of the major sites like Juno, Beatport, and Itunes.  Check out the Inna Riddim store for purchase too!    He also built a promo mix for this release, composed primarily of his own productions.  The mix is available for download off of the Inna Riddim website so if you’re vibin’, then snag it on up!  You can find the mix’s tracklist/download link below.  If you want to check out press release put out by the label, check it here.

Ey Fam,

Shout outs to all BWS followers keeping it locked. We hope you enjoy jamming out to the tunes we post as much as we do. Thursday’s here which means tomorrow night we party, so in honor of that we’re gonna bring you some tunes to get you ready for the weekend.

First tune is one that’s been in circulation for some time now finding its way into the nooks and crannies of radio stations here and there. A large one from N-Type & Surge entitled Triangles set to release on Wheel & Deal sometime in the next couple months as part of an N-Type & Surge EP. Sorry about the vocals over the track, but if you listen past that, you’ll recognize that mega bass N-Type’s been cranking out for years. With fat smashing snares and scattered vocal echoes over a mega wobble this tune is bound to be one that will light up the dance. Enjoy.

The next tune we want to bring to your attention is one that’s been receiving much chatter around the internet, a tune we’d expect many of you heads to have your hands on, but one very worthy of further attention. The tune titled Classified by Organics was recently handed out for free via the Hedmuk Blog. This lurker is sure to make your nose itch if listened to with a proper sub. Quality production. Make sure to head over to Hedmuk and grab your free download and big up their operation over there. Here’s a link to their site ‪http://hedmuk.blogspot.com/.

The last one here is one sure to make you skank into the weekend. A monster of a tune from Anex with Demon on the remix a tune entitled Delusions. Getting airtime on both Youngsta’s and Distance’s Rinse.FM shows this is a massive one from upcoming producer Anex. So large, you hear the MC calling to pull it back, make sure to crank this one up. With a tribal drum intro into a half step stomper this one will surely blow ears. Whatever you’re doing this weekend be sure to enjoy yourself to this tune.

Hope that eases you into the weekend. Big up fam spread the love.

Don’t be a gangsta’, dance like one!

F*CK Yeah Friday

Big up to all the heads!  Yes, it’s Friday and boy do we have a HUGE lineup of tracks for you today.  We are truly fascinated at how many top-notch releases are making it out at the end of 2011 and early 2012.  With all that has happened this year, 2012 will surely play out to be one of the most interesting years for bass music, for any and all genres.

The first track that we have for you today is a collaboration between Biome and an artist previously featured on Bassweight Society, Thelem.  The track is titled ‘Jugana’, and pushes out some heart stopping low-frequencies.  The bouncy drum sequence keeps your legs on the move while your mind is on a journey through deep space, possibly to Kepler-22b.  Hopefully this track will see a release in the near future but for now enjoy this Soundcloud clip!

Biome & Thelem – Jugana

The next tune that we have is one from the EXTREMELY talented New Zealand duo, TRUTH, aka “the sonic architects of songs.”  We had the pleasure of hosting these guys at one of our shows up here in Santa Barbara and they absolutely smashed the town into pieces.  People had no idea what they were in for and when they got it, they couldn’t get enough!  This track, titled ‘Last Time’, is one engineered in the finest of manners.  The vibe that this track gives out is honestly still a mystery to us but, YOU WANT THIS FEELING.  Take a listen.

Truth – Last Time

The next pair of tracks that we have for you are an absolutely mandatory component of everybody’s music library(once they are released).  We speak of the men known as Killa & Instinct.  The Bristol based production team has been on top their game and is now looking forward to releases on Orientis Recordings and BOKA Records in early 2012.  The first track deserving of attention is one titled ‘Elements’ and is due out on a special three-part release series from Boka early next year.  A little on the chilled side of things this track is very beneficial to any thought-requiring task, as it’s percussion filled sound spectrum rolls through your body with meditative vibes.  The next one that we have is a remix of Thelem’s tune titled ‘Drone’ that was released in October of this year.  Again, this track is filled with immense percussion and bangs out some ridiculously deep and dark vibes.  Take a listen to both below!

Killa & Instinct – Elements

Thelem – Drones (Killa & Instinct Remix)

We have one final track for you today and it’s one from the man like Ipman.  We just recently featured the remix he had done of Killawatt’s ‘Sidewinder’, and he’s back on our radar with this unreal original production, titled ‘Mirage’.  This tune is an epic buildup into one of the funkiest and most bass-heavy tunes that we’ve heard on the late!  There is no room for denial that this tune is of absolute quality!  Take a listen and try not to dance, guaranteed it won’t happen :).

Ipman – Mirage

That’s the word today everybody!  Hope you all have an amazing weekend and we’ll see you again on Monday with some badman mixes to start your week off right!

Peace.

7 Questions for Seven : Exclusive Interview with One of UK’s Finest.

Tonight, Bassweight Society sits down with the badman Eddy Woo, aka Seven.  If you haven’t heard this name circulating around clean your ears out, because Seven’s ability to produce low-frequencies in such a HUGE fashion is hard to miss.  We here at  Bassweight Society recognize the talent that Eddy exhibits and show MAD support for his music.   Receiving a huge amount of support from long-time friend, Youngsta, Eddy’s transition into the dubstep scene was almost inevitable.  Acclaimed by many as one of “…the most technical DJ’s on the market today”, Seven takes his stage performance very seriously.  Eddy is a man who has truly dedicated his ENTIRE life to his music.  Especially lately with his debut album on the verge of release, which we’ll find out more about in our interview.  So lets get down to the business at hand, representing UK Dubstep worldwide across the globe…. Seven from Black Box Records, Wheel & Deal, Tempa and Subway Recs:

BWS:  How do you view the US dubstep scene? and How does it compare to the UK?
  • Seven: It’s kinda become its own thing really. It’s followed suit from the bro-step uprising which came out of the UK, produced by many dnb artists having a try at dubstep. But it varies greatly from the music we are making in the UK now. We have been through that era and although some UK parties and commercial radio stations still play that kinda music, the forward thinking nights and radio shows are all playing true UK dubstep at its finest. I think the sound will catch on in the USA.   As it did in the UK, people will just get bored with the same old noises over n over and the scene there will evolve and reshape.

BWS: What other musical influences outside of dubstep do you incorporate into your productions?

  • Seven: I get asked this a lot. I’m not even really that sure to be honest. I guess my dnb past plays a role in terms of the darkness i like to incorporate into my tunes. That whole 1996 – 1999 era of jungle/dnb shows through in the atmosphere I create in my tracks.
BWS: Listening to your mixing, you have a very technical style.  How do you play out live? and What do you want the audience to take home from your performances?
  • Seven: I use Serato and Technics 1210s. I grew up mixing on decks with vinyl, so it’s the only way I know how to do my thing the best I can.  When was a kid I used to chill with friends after big nights out and talk about tracks, DJ’s and mixes with so much enthusiasm. I hope people talk about me and my tunes like that after they come to see me perform live.  I love to DJ. I want people to enjoy what I do, like I enjoy doing it. It’s what comes natural to me and before any productions, so I put all my heart and soul into my sets. I treat it like a performance, in hope people go home and remember my set and anticipate seeing me again. I try to make the sets as intricate and exciting as I can. I try to make it all about euphoric build ups and big double drops with cutting edge music and future proof vibes.
BWS: What are your favorite production mediums? DAWs? Hardware? Software?
  • Seven: Mac Pro running Logic Pro. Moog and Virus Ti synths. UAD2 QUAD and various plug-ins. Mackie 824mk1 monitors.
BWS: Do you have any side projects in the works?
  • Seven: No, I have literally focused all my time on my album which is due for release anytime soon. I do make other music genres, but I am solely focused on what I’m doing right now. The album.
BWS: What motivated you to switch your sounds up to dubstep?  We know you used to make a lot of well-known drum and bass before your appearance in the dubstep scene.
  • Seven: DJ Youngsta is a close friend of mine. Around 2006 he asked me to make him a track to play in his sets. He knew my productions standards were of a professional level and was keen to hear me make a dubstep track for him. It didn’t take my persuading as I had found my sound to be very formulated in dnb. It felt more like a production line, than a fun vocation. So I went into the studio and made a track I named “Changing Lanes”. Youngsta played it in all of his sets and it encouraged me to make more.  So it was a turning point for me, and a huge one too. I began to make lots more dubstep. It really brought the fun back into production times.   I got caught up in a whirl wind with it after that and had a string of successful releases which cemented my roots into the scene.
BWS: Are there any releases that people should keep their eyes out for in the near future?
  • Seven: Yes. My debut album on Black Box Records. Titled “Evolution” we are just rounding up the project now and we’re hoping we can get it out before the end of the year.   It will feature 13 tracks by myself. No collabs apart from vocals inclusions. But I think people will be pleasantly surprised by who I have chosen. But that’s a surprise. It will be available on both vinyl, CD and digital formats and showcases my sound from all one side of the spectrum to the other.
Seven’s Soundcloud:
There you have it people, from the man himself.  Make sure you keep your eyes out for the full length album from Seven, due out very soon.
A special thanks from BWS to Seven for his support.
